Should I have been tested for Gestational Diabetes? Baby measuring big!

Hi, I’m 35 weeks pregnant. I had a growth scan at 32 weeks and was told baby girl was measuring big - estimated 4lb 12 and 94th percentile (I’m aware that growth scan results can be wrong). I was surprised but not too surprised as my bump did seem big. I was told ‘we won’t worry just yet’ and another growth scan was booked for 36 weeks. After I left I did wonder whether I should have been booked in for a gestational diabetes test - but no one has ever mentioned me getting this test. I thought everyone had it but apparently not? I text my midwife to ask her about the test and she read it and didn’t respond. I’ve seen her once since but in all honesty I was so concerned about reduced movements that morning that I forgot to ask.

Anyone else had a similarly predicted ‘big baby’ without being tested? Do you think I’ve been missed or is it common not to be tested for GD? Are there obvious symptoms of GD?

Thanks in advance x

Hi
My baby also measured large for gestational age, I had a scan today at 31 plus 6.
I had a GD test at 28 weeks due to PCOS and it was normal.
They've asked after every scan about diabetes. I think you should've deffo had the test.
Don't panic though usually with GD there is also loads of fluid and also they'd pick up glucose in your urine at routine midwife checks. X

Depending on the trust, it's often when baby is measuring >95th centile that a GTT will be offered to check for diabetes.

I was chatting to a midwife who specialises in GD last night. She said some trusts automatically test you for it, but most won’t test you unless you have some of the symptoms (excessively thirsty, peeing a lot). I have a large baby and not been tested and I’ve put on a large amount of weight, I was curious to see if I would be but nope, apparently not!

I had a 98/99th centile baby and no GD.
baby was breech and so I was sent for a scan at 37 weeks where they suddenly freaked out a bit about his size. I hadn’t been tested for GD (in my trust you have to fit a list of criteria which I didn’t meet nor did I have symptoms).

they put me on a GD diet and made me test my blood sugar (always normal) for the last few weeks, pointless imo, and he was born at 38+6 weight 8lbs 10oz. Baby had no signs of uncontrolled GD and sugars were normal. They also tested my blood after birth, they can run a 3 month history, and showed no signs of GD.

I had a GD test at around 26 weeks and it was fine. However, I was also measuring big so they made me do another GD test when I was 32 weeks and it showed that I had GD.

When I finally saw the consultant, he wasn’t happy with what had happened. According to him, GD tests need to be done in a specific window because towards later pregnancy, the test is unreliable and you’re more likely to get false positives because it’s normal for glucose to break down more slowly in later pregnancy (that’s obvs my layman translation of what he said). As I was had started finger pricking every day and watching what I ate, I had barely any spikes so he doubted whether I had it all and I simply had a bigger baby.

So that might be why you haven’t done it - perhaps they’re not keen on doing it in later pregnancy.
