Hi, I never had to have a sweep as the baby hadnt dropped enought. I dont think i was even offered a sweep till i was about 41 weeks and if all is looking ok with you and bump, i'm sure they wont rush to induce you. They're normally happy for you to do your 2 weeks over. I looked into the sweep and different people experiences of it vary and i don't think it's too bad. It doesn't take vary long and much better to get that over and done and at least try it rather than make labour any more enhanced than it can be... Ther'll be loads of info on a sweep on the net so you could always read more. Also trpe in naturally inducing labour. there is loads you can find on that too... things that are good and may help ine, walking - helps the baby get into position and put pressure on the right bits, sex - something in the semen which helps ripen uterus and your orgasm - helpful chemicals in that. then there is evening primrose oil - read up on that one. Then lesser so, fresh pinaple & hot currys. I'm sure as all of us, you've had enough and just want the baby out... but just try and take it easy and rest as much as possible till it all gets going.
Hope all goes well for you. Hope i've been an ok help. If u have have a girl i've got some lovely excellent condition next girls clothes going cheap at www.picturetrail.com/adelefielder and can post straight away. Take care and all the best, adele

Jess, had my first sweep last week and then another one on Wednesday. So far none of them worked.

I was worried about it too and was ready for it to be painfull and uncomfortable but still tried to relax. It wasn't bad at all, if you relax and don't think too much about what is happening you might not even notice that it is already over. Was nothing compare to smears, for me anyway.

Give it a go and try to relax as much as possible! Good Luck!

How long do sweeps take?

i didn't have sweep with ds1 and ended up being induced at 40 + 9 i had one with dd 2 and it didn't work. Doesn't take long , just a litle uncomfortable. But i was still induced with her although her induction was million times better than first.
Each experience is different

You don't have to have either if you don't want to - you can just ask for extra monitoring. Babies come in their own sweet time (just after you give up hope of them ever arriving normally)

I had a sweep at 40 weeks with DS2. The consultant said to me if I stopped moving up the bed, then he could get it done a lot quicker

I found it uncomfortable but then my pain tolerance is not very good.

Labour started two days later.

jellyrolly · 26/04/2008 15:08

I had a sweep with ds2 and, like you, asked around, looked on t'internet and consequently scared myself silly with painful stories. In fact, it didn't hurt at all. When I said this, my midwife said, "I always think I should have done more when they say that!"

Like most invasive things, it's the thought of it that is worse. It could be beginning of meeting your baby! Good luck x

Sweep was over in a minute or so too.

How painful a sweep is depends very much on who does it in my experience. I have had 4 to date (two last pregnancy and two last week).

Sweep #1: Uncomfortable but not unbearable. Very very quick. Achieved nothing. Done by very new (trainee?) midwife at hospital.

Sweep #2: Very very painful. Lasted a couple of minutes (which is quite a long time when someone's rootling in your nethers). Achieved lots of cramps and aches and a slight show. Done by more experienced midwife at hospital.

Sweep #3: Very painful. Achieved nothing. We can discount this one though because my horrible useless midwife did it and she was rough and had huge hands and told me there was nothing to stretch or sweep and turned out to be wrong. Her horrible stubby little fingers just couldn't reach. Or she couldn't be bothered. Horrible.

Sweep #4: Uncomfortable but managable. A bit painful. Lasted about a minute. Successfully separated membrane from something or other. Done by lovely consultant at hospital.

You don't have to have one if you don't want one. It's worse than a smear, but different than a smear too. Smears make me feel a bit sick, but stretch & sweeps don't, they just hurt.

Have only been induced once (and will be again tomorrow). It was pretty hard, but that's because despite being 3+ weeks overdue my body wasn't remotely getting ready for labour or birth. I think induction if you're nearly there anyway isn't so bad. You'll have to have an internal examination anyway to establish if you're getting there. Plus induction inself involves various people rootling in your fanjo eg to administer pessaries or break your waters or just see how you're doing.

Sorry not to have posted the most cheering message. Honesty best policy and all that. Plus my experience might be very different to yours. Good luck and I wish you a spontaneous labour! (You can have mine if you like as it's clear I'm not having one!)

With DS1 I had a sweep in the throws of labour to moves thing on a bit and it did hurt to be honest.
With DS2 I had a sweep at 40+1 day and didn't feel a thing.
Good luck with everything.
