I am 15 weeks into pregnancy no 3 and heartburn is kicking in - bleurgh so I have bought me Gaviscon but I cannot take it anymore!! I think I have reached my limit after chewing my way through boxes of the stuff in the 2 previous pregnancies I feel pretty much the same about peppermint tea. What else is there that works??

I have just had 2 of the lemon flavoured Gaviscon in the vain hope that the slightly different taste would fool my gag response - no joy.

I also no longer drink cider or rum due to over indulgence in my misspent youth - shudder just the thought of a pint of strongbow is enough to make me want to hurl.

So suggestions please - heartburn is a b*gger .

Towards the end only ice pops made any difference to me. I found the Gaviscon liquid really disgusting and whether or not it caused it, the tablets didn't stop me feeling awful or throwing up everything including them.

I am enjoying a huge bowl of Raspberry sorbet right now - it is my only craving this pregnancy and although I am sure it is not a recommended cure for heartburn it tastes bloody fantastic

Thank you for all the replies I will have to list all the suggestions and go through them methodically - there hs to be something in there for me [crossed fingers emoticon]

Next I will have to get over my Raspberry leaf tea aversion ....

I am never keen on taking medcine and certainly not someone who pops something without due cause but I do not understand why so many healthcare professionals are reluctant to help pregnant women.
There is this real attitude that nothing can be done, get over it and it will only last a few months. I have also found very little sympathy and feel almost guilty asking for help.
I have suffered during pregnancy which has caused quite a bit of stress. I vomitted all the way through my first pregnancy and was a stone lighter when I fnally gave birth (Initially lost 2.5 stone). This time has also been similar and with that I have the symphis pubis disorder so can hardly move or walk. No one has been able to help with the pain etc. until I finally took my husband and his pharmacy journal to the GP. Then very reluctantly they prescribed zantac which has made my life sooo much better, but I was made to feel incredibly guilty about this. I recently went and saw a Ob Consultant who was very sympathetic and she said for goodness sake you can take pain relief and zantac and please do not get worried about it as it is safe during pregnancy. So why then do so many health professionals seem to think it is acceptable for some women to suffer if medication is ok? Sorry I am on a high horse but it does make me sad that so many women suffer which I am sure also effects your baby and how you feel about being pregnant etc. The relief I have finally gotten from zantac has turned me back into my normal, happy, fun loving self (admittedly I am still struggling with walking but at least I do not feel like collapsing from hunger and fatigue)and I can not believe how much I am enjoying pregnancy this time around.

The only thing that worked for me was bio yoghurt.

I agree cilc - I'm realy odd about taking medication...but heartburn really defeated me and so little help seems forthcoming. I just got told to take heaps of Gaviscon - which made me worse and didn't work.

First pregnancy i was realy ill with heartburn....it lasted all day and night with me vomiting. This time round a gp (not my usual one) prescribed ranitidine....only once I'd got to 30 weeks and was vomiting blood! I think it's the same as Zantac....now I only need 1 tablet every few days....and I'm able to get on with life with my 17 month old...and only have 5 weeks to go!

CilC · 27/04/2008 17:08

Good luck jeanjeannie - no long at all! I still have 13 weeks but it all seems so much easier now. Yes ranatidine is the same I believe...but don't hold me to it!

I also had terrible heartburn - it felt as though my insides were swimming in a pool of acid - awful. I went to my GP and he prescribed Omeprazole - suitable for pregnant woman - and it worked wonders!
