Spatone - how long till it starts working?

Have a seriously low iron level - will have to be admitted if it falls further, but can't stand iron tablets, they just make me vomit. Do seem to be able to tolerate two of these Spatone sachet things a day (though it does taste like licking the plumbing!)

Anyone out there used it and can tell me how long it'll take to start taking effect?

Spatone is fabulous! I hope you're mixing it with fresh orange juice?? Iron is absorbed by the body only when ascorbic acid (vit C) is present, so you need vit C! Also get as much iron in your diet from the usual dark green veg etc!

mazzystar · 25/04/2008 21:46

I'd give it a week

It sorted me out in both pregnancies, and post acute illness

whomovedmychocolate · 25/04/2008 21:47

Yes, I'm having it with orange juice (yuck).

Thanks both of you - if it's as little as a week I'll be very happy.

i am taking two a day and i would say it took a week?

fabulous though i drink it in orange

fledtoscotland · 25/04/2008 22:37

i took it for about 5 days before i noticed the difference and i didnt think it tasted too bad with orange juice

DKMA · 25/04/2008 22:43

Took a couple of weeks for me to notice anything, and I'm still taking it.

Tastes like nosebleed to me (puke) and I have to take it after a meal otherwise I feel sick as a dog.

ButterflyMcQueen · 25/04/2008 23:07

its like drinking metal ......vom

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 25/04/2008 23:21

I hate the way it makes orange juice taste flat. I much prefer it in diluted lime juice cordial.

Some people say that Spatone will maintain your iron levels but won't raise it. That's not my experience - my levels have been down to 8 in previous pregnancies and 2 Spatones a day bought it back up to 9 or 10 in time for the birth. I've taken Spatone through this pregnancy and my last blood test had a reading of 10.4 (that's bloody whopping for me). Homebirth is GO!

And best of all, it doesn't make you do hard black poo's like you've been on the Guinness all night.

It wasn;t enough for me when I was anaemic after ds3- I needed horse pills - although I dropped them for the spatone asap.

fledtoscotland · 25/04/2008 23:27

dont know whether it has raised my iron levels or not (was 7 point something) but it has definitely given me more energy and not constipated me at all.

expatinscotland · 25/04/2008 23:29

it didn't work for me.

it still ripped my gut and gave me terrible runs.

all horse pills did the same thing.

so i went along with the HB at toilet levels - 8 right before birth.

whomovedmychocolate · 26/04/2008 09:15

Well I've managed to keep it down for the second day and amazingly haven't been sick yet this morning (my morning sickness returned after a four week break gah!) However I'm finding it bloody difficult to wait a half hour before having a cup of tea after taking it.

Thanks everyone for replying, I have some hope at least of staying out of hospital if it works

I think you can take more than 2 a day. I was recommended 4 (in 2 doses) to try to get my iron levels up. I've found it is good for stabilising iron levels rather than bringing them up very much. I've taken it throughout this pregnancy and at 28 weeks was 10.2 which is good for me. But my consultant still wants to test again at 36 weeks (why? why?) wiht a view to giving me IV iron in hospital (again, why? why?)

beforesunrise · 26/04/2008 12:57

hi there- biocare do an iron supplement which is not as nasty as the tablets and can be taken at the same time as floradix (which i think is a bit like spatone?)

www.health4youonline.com/health_supplements_biocare_b202-60.htm

good luck

cheerfulvicky · 26/04/2008 18:09

I've found SpaTone really great, and to my mind it doesn't taste too bad in a glass of orange juice. I quite like the taste actually
I'd say it has an effect within days, pretty good stuff. It says on the box pregnant woman can take at least 2 sachets a day...

JennyWren · 26/04/2008 21:14

I am also taking Spatone this pregnancy and feel so much better than last time. The only thing I would say is that the amount of iron you absorb from green veg etc is much less than that you absorb from red meat - so whilst veg are generally good for you, to really up your iron levels you need steak, steak and, err: steak .

whomovedmychocolate · 26/04/2008 21:17

JennyWren - oh don't worry I'm a virulent cow eater! However to get even a day's allowance of iron you'd have to eat something like 2lbs of beef. After about 3oz I fall asleep!

I'm taking Spatone to try and get my iron levels up as they'd dropped a bit and I'm hoping for a home birth. Definitely feel like I have more energy and I don't mind the taste at all. Try it in Ribena - yum! Fresh orange juice just makes my horrific heart burn even worse.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 26/04/2008 22:01

And whilst we're about it, I thoroughly recommend staying on Spatone for at least 3 months post-birth, one a day or every other day. My chronic 'new baby' tiredness is often due to anaemia but it always takes me weeks and weeks to realise.

I'm prepared this time. (And so I should be given it's my 4th go).

Joanne43S · 05/05/2024 11:46

Hi did you end up taking 4 a day please of the spatone sachets
