Any older mums ?

Any older mums on here that have recently found out they’re expecting? Are any of you getting the Nipt blood test or having any testing for chromosomal abnormalities? I’m working myself up about it and all the risks of being a “ geriatric mother “ . I’m currently 7 weeks ish and I’m 40 years old.

Hey I’m 37 and will be 38 when baby is born. I will definitely be getting nipt. I have had a chromosomally abnormal pregnancy before age 34 which I discovered through nipt. think it’s important to have as much information as possible. It’s expensive and it will be especially difficult for me after the last time but that won’t stop me getting it again.

Thank you for your reply , yes I agree that it is important , I want to enjoy my pregnancy knowing this will be my last and I won’t relax unless I know everything is ok , 12 years ago with my son I was 1 in 151 with the NT scan and bloods so 1 out from being high risk so wasn’t offered further invasive testing , he was born completely healthy but I was over analysing , googling , having more scans and nothing put my mind at ease which took the enjoyment away.

I'm 41 and 19 weeks pregnant (I'll be 42 when she's due).
I opted to get the advanced NIPT privately before my 12 week scan as I pretty much knew I'd come back as high risk with the combined test results due to age and I didn't want that added worry.
The NIPT came back as low risk for everything so I went into my 12 week scan feeling much more relaxed and positive

Hello,

I'm almost 35 weeks pregnant and I've just turned 42! Had the nipt test at ten weeks all come back low risk. It was definitely worth the money, everything has been perfect so far. I did have a pre term labour scare last week, where I had to have steroids but was a false alarm and now patiently waiting for little man to arrive. Easier said than done, but please try and enjoy your pregnancy. Being 40 doesn't mean it's going to be a bad experience. I had pre eclampsia in my 20's and not in this pregnancy so age isn't always a downfall.

I’m 41 and 23 weeks pregnant. I didn’t have a NIPT but would have done if my combined screening came back as high chance for a trisomy. Fortunately I was a 1 in less than 5000 chance for T13, 18 and 21.

This is my third baby and my pregnancy has been straightforward so far. I’ve also cared for lots of women older than me (I’m a midwife) who have had straightforward pregnancies and deliveries, so being older doesn’t necessarily been a complex pregnancy.

CortieTat · 02/11/2024 12:46

I’m 46 and my combined screening returned low risks for all three trisomies so we decided not to pay for nipt. I reviewed over 10 various published studies reporting on false negatives with no soft markers and odds like mine coming from the algorithm used in combined screening and the probability of getting a false negative was so low that we decided nipt was not worth the money.

I'm 39 I had a blood test come back 1in 125 for downs so had a extra blood test to check baby's dna in my blood that came back 99.9% no downs , I have low apapp protein well it's borderline plus my age

Stressheadshouldbeinbed · 02/11/2024 20:22

I’m 44 next month and currently 16 weeks with my 3rd; we had the standard (nhs) combined screening which came back as 1 in 440 for T21 and 1 in 5000 for T13 and T18. Didn’t opt for any further testing but had planned to if the risk had been higher.

Ncocta · 02/11/2024 20:38

I had my second when I was 41 and definitely worth the NIPT for peace of mind, we had it privately before the 12 week NHS scan (which returned with higher risk due to age factor)

That’s exactly what I’m thinking I know the results will come back high risk just with the age factor and especially if I have high hcg levels as they were quite high when I had early bloods but I understand there are alot of other factors like the nuchal measurements. I have a private scan booked for the 15th nov and they do the nipt there so once I’ve got accurate measurements I’ll book in for Nipt , I’ve fallen pregnant immediately after an early miscarriage with no period inbetween so a bit tricky with the dating.

Glad that everything is going ok and that you didn’t have Bub early , thank you for the reassurance, just goes to show that age isn’t always a factor in having a problematic pregnancy x

Bet You was very relieved at them results , and it’s nice to know there are so many older mums doing it all again or having their first babies x

How are you feeling ? I’ve had a rough start with the nausea and generally feeling ill which I never had with my older children.

I had my only at 42. I was a bit concerned about the risks but it certainly didn’t consume me. Back in those days only the nuchal scan was available and I was reassured. Try and put the risks into perspective - they really aren’t that high.

I’m halfway my 20th week.

natasha39 · 03/11/2024 08:34

14 weeks

CortieTat · 03/11/2024 08:43

I’ve already had my halfway scan and the baby is developing normally. My risks from combined screening were over 2000 (1:2300 or something) for Down’s syndrome and 1:20000 for the other two. I started with a base risk of 1:20 for DS due to age so the final results were good enough for me.

My region (not in the UK) offers free Nipt on risks higher than 1:1000.
