Too early for viability scan?

So I want to get an early scan, but when I want to book it for I would be:
According to last period 7 weeks 4 days
According to ovulation 6 weeks 4 days

Would that be too early or would it be ok?

I’d wait another week or two, 6 weeks is really the absolute earliest you would see a heartbeat so being so close to that date you might not get the reassurance you are looking for even if everything is fine x

I had a scan at 6+1 from ovulation and saw an embryo with heartbeat but I was told I was lucky as you can't always see that before 7 weeks.

Also weeks 6-8 are very high risk in pregnancy in terms of MC so even when you've seen the baby then, there's not much reassurance.

If you can wait until you are definitely over 8 weeks from ovulation then there will be much more to see plus the odds of MC drop substantially after you've seen a HB after 8 weeks.

If you know exactly when you ovulated then that is much more accurate than LMP - I'm 18 weeks now and 12 days behind my LMP date as I ovulated late.

Work from the last day of your period. You would expect to see sn embryo at 6 weeks if you have a 28 day cycle

Harriet1989 · 29/10/2024 10:24

We usually count 'weeks pregnant' from first day of your last period.. which is odd considering you're not pregnant at all for the first two weeks but hey!

So when the scanning companies say 7 weeks they mean from your last period - unless your cycles are particularly out of the norm and you know you ovulate a lot later?

Yeah mine are a bit longer, I usually ovulate around CD 20/21

The extra 2 weeks is because it's the life of the egg so it's taken from the time the egg is released that then becomes the baby.

LMP date is the early estimate but is based on a very average 28 day cycle with ovulation on day 14, it's not accurate for everyone which is why you then get an official due date at your dating scan based on your babies measurements.

If OP knows exactly when she ovulated than that will be more accurate than LMP (you still add on 2 weeks)

I had my early scan pretty much bang on 6 weeks and they were able to detect the heartbeat, I know it's hit and miss sometimes though as it may be too early but I couldn't wait any longer!

That makes sense! Maybe in a few days then so you've got to 7 weeks from your ovulation dates?

InTheRainOnATrain · 29/10/2024 10:37

I’d go with 8 weeks from last period. That’s when you’d have your first scan in most other countries, so presumably is the ideal time.

Superscientist · 29/10/2024 10:37

I qualify for an early scan with my epu and they have told me to phone them when I'm 6 weeks and they will arrange a scan between then and 8 weeks. So I'd probably follow similar if going for a private scan.

How reassuring would you find it if there was normal development but no heartbeat yet if you timed it a little early? If you would stress and panic. I would wait until 7-8 weeks. If you could be objective and know that it was early and there was always a chance you wouldn't see the heartbeat yet but it's reassuring that they did see xyz. If the later I would go whenever you want.

I see so many women on here that go for early scans when it's hit or miss if they will see what they want to see. There's more errors in how far along they are and the reassurance scan just produces more anxiety. I think some times we have to be a bit introspective about our own psychology and whether something will be reassuring or anxiety provoking.

You are so right, I think if I couldn't see the heartbeat I would worry more. I'll wait another week or so

I saw a heartbeat at 5 weeks 5 days with my second baby.

Lwrenn · 29/10/2024 11:19

After an ectopic pregnancy you're more likely to have another so they send you for a really early scan, anyway I spotted a positive line on my test maybe a few days after conceiving (because I was so paranoid I was going to have another ectopic I checked constantly) and i had a scan stupidly early, the sac was in the right place by there wasn't a heartbeat and I was told my pregancy showed "no signs compatible with life", I vomited in the bathroom and cried all the way home inconsolably. I had a call a few days later from my hospital to say they'd booked me in for a scan 3 weeks later but the nurse I spoke to was really positive, she said they were cautious to not get up my hopes but I had no bleeding, I was vomiting (I get hg) and no pains, just try to stay positive and I waited 3 horrendous weeks to be told (thankfully) baby had a heartbeat. She's 1 now. But those few weeks were horrific. Unless you're worried the pregnancy is ectopic in which case you want it the pregancy ended ASAP so you can hopefully avoid surgery, I'd not suggest anyone has an early scan for reassurance due to how long it takes to see a heartbeat if you go too early for the scan.

I'm sending you lots of love and hope all goes really well x

Harriet1989 · 29/10/2024 20:27

Think the PP guidance above is spot on. I had an early scan with my first due to a bleed and pain and saw a heartbeat and found it reassuring but I can't imagine how awful it would have been if I hadn't and had to wait wondering. Ignorance can be bliss sometimes (or maybe more accurately, slightly less anxiety inducing!)

Writerz34 · 29/10/2024 20:45

OP do you mean you ovulated 6 weeks ago? If so you're technically 8 weeks pregnant. You can go from 6w0d for early scan but as others have said there's a chance of seeing nothing - so it depends how you think you'd react to that uncertainty. I had one that was too early to see anything but I didn't particularly find that more stressful than not knowing at all so for me it's worth going early just in case they can reassure, but as above for many it would be better to wait a bit.
