My GP surgery is very frustrating. I'm 16+5 and my midwife has told me I need to get the Whooping cough, flu and covid vaccines. I've called my GP and they are making it so difficult. They say I need whooping cough but won't book the appointment. They have a flu and Covid vaccine clinic on Monday but won't give me an appointment. They said to call on Monday after 11 am and they'll ask the nurse if I need it! They already asked the nurse today who said yes and a simple Google says I'm eligible.

I'm thinking about switching GPs. Does anyone know how long this would take? Should I try to get my vaccines first? My DH also is eligible for flu and Covid vaccines and they won't give him an appointment.

Just thought, can I get my flu and Covid done at a pharmacy?

Whooping cough is usually done at your 20-week scan, or soom thereafter by a midwife. I'm sure there's some variation by region but certainly the case where we are?

Flu and covid you should be eligible for - you can book covid via the NHS app and select that you want the flu vaccine at the same time :-)

Otherwise, yes you can get flu and covid vaccines at a pharmacy.

Whooping cough is not done by GP it’s done by midwife at your appointment.

Flu you can get at pharmacy yes

Lunamoon23 · 24/10/2024 13:18

I've had all my vaccines booked for me by my midwife and have had them at scan appointments. My whooping cough was done at my 20 weeks scan appointment and I had my flu and RSV at my scan this week (was a placenta checking scan) at 32 weeks.

I'd ask your midwife. However yes you could have your flu and covid one done at a local boots etc. but the whooping cough and RSV one id speak with your midwife about xxx

CCLCECSC · 24/10/2024 13:22

Flu jab you could get done in boots; they can administer to those eligible on the NHS as well paying customers.

Covid book online.

Whooping cough could be done at your 20week scan.

They don't do vaccines at the 20 week scan here annoyingly. It's done by the gp. My midwife is getting funding for a vaccine clinic so they can do them there but she said it won't be up and running in time for my whooping cough but they potentially might be for RSV.

I'm going to go the pharmacy for flu and Covid and I guess keep hounding for an appointment for whooping cough.

You can book your COVID and flu vaccine at local pharmacies through the NHS page or 119 (I googled NHS COVID vaccine). I qualify for COVID vaccines but not flu and my GP is only running a flu clinic so only those that get both can get them at the GP but not those that only qualify for covid. You get asked if you want to book the flu vaccine at the same time. I did and got them both but I had to pay for my flu vaccine. I'm not pregnant but qualify under other requirements

I was pregnant in the summer and was told that they would do my whooping cough vaccine at one of my 20-something midwife appointments. They used to do them at 16 weeks but they have now shifted it to after the 20 week scan.

Firestace · 24/10/2024 16:49

GPs don't usually get funding under their contract either, it's annoying as a patient because someone should do it, but can see why they're not overly keen really. I guess you could ask your midwife to contact the GP surgery directly confirming they cannot do them?

Emmzo · 24/10/2024 19:18

I can’t remember the exact timeframe but I remember being told that whooping cough was timed so that baby still had immunity between birth and first vaccinations. I think it’s between 20-28 weeks x

Blue2020 · 24/10/2024 19:47

I had the whooping cough at my doctors at around 26/27 weeks. I called and booked it at 22 weeks.

I just went to my pharmacy for flu/covid.

Does your hospital not run a vaccination clinic? I've had whooping cough, flu and RSV at my local maternity hospital. The only thing they don't do is Covid for pregnant women, but my GP has offered me that anyway. If your GP are running clinics for flu and Covid I think it's bizarre they aren't offering it to you. Can your midwife contact them or maybe escalate it to the practice manager?
