Horrendous 24/7 sickness

I'm 6 weeks pregnant and feeling unbelievably low as I'm fed up with feeling sick the whole time. I've been trying to eat little and often, and I'm on cyclizine which I've been taking 3 times a day for nearly a week but I'm just not feeling any better, and if anything it just makes me drowsy and want to nap all the time, which I can't do as I work and have other children. I feel like it's making me not want to go on with the pregnancy and resent it. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks

Go back to your doctor - they can try other medications xx

Floam6 · 20/10/2024 19:30

Thank you @moosey89. I'll try first thing tomorrow as I'm desperate xx

Go back to the doctor . I had sickness until 20 weeks, l think people underestimate how debilitating it is.

WhimsicalGubbins76 · 20/10/2024 19:35

No advice other than carry a bucket around with you.
Im actually serious OP. I had morning, noon and night sickness the entire 9 months, also spent 2 weeks hospitalised with hyperemisis gravidarium.
I was offered absolutely nothing to help (this was in 05-06) as my GP and the midwives all said nothing has been proven as safe in pregnancy.
I had to work through it, I literally carried a bucket round with me. Weirdly, I found the only time I wasn’t physically sick (though I was still nauseous) was if I was driving. But if I was a passenger, I could easily throw up 3 or 4 times on a 15 minute journey.
It’s horrendous, and I’m so sorry you’re dealing with it, but odds are yours will end with the first trimester. Most do.
But if you’re unlucky like me, the only ray of hope I can offer is that you get so used to it that it’s stops bothering you as much. You just kind of accept it.
Then the second your baby is born it’s gone, instantly

Floam6 · 20/10/2024 20:10

Thanks all. I'm seriously considering not going through with the pregnancy. I can't take it much longer.

Ask about xonovea when you visit you gp it’s the only drug specifically for pregnancy sickness. Ordanstron was helpful for me also but it took trying several overs for the doctors to consider prescribing it. Try ice lollies in the mean time.

musicalfrog · 20/10/2024 20:31

There used to be a support thread for those suffering with HG, in the pregnancy forum. Not sure if it's still going?

moosey89 · 20/10/2024 20:32

Also have you tried the motion sickness bands? Definitely not a magic fix but I know some people they have helped and as they're totally harmless it might be worth a shot. I also found sipping ice cold water helped with some temporary relief. Xx

Prawncocktail24 · 20/10/2024 20:38

Xoneva. Ask the GP about it. I'm 23 weeks, and I've gone from being sick 5 or 6 times a day to no sickness at all. They're definitely still working because I forgot to take them once last week and spent the whole next day throwing up. I too was given cyclizine - worked wonders for me when I was the same during my first pregnancy, but they haven't helped at all this time round. Definitely go back to your GP x

TeamPlaying · 20/10/2024 20:44

Look up the charity Pregnancy Sickness Support. They have loads of helpful information. It can be useful to have an idea of what you want before talking to your GP.

Cyclizine worked for me, largely because it knocked me out to sleep through the nausea! But it’s only the first option, there are plenty of others out there to try.

BatildaB · 20/10/2024 22:30

Can you take sick leave from work and just sleep as much as you can? For me cyclizine made life liveable because I could sleep through much of the nausea, and I was off work for a few weeks. Didn’t have other children to care for though.

Adamsapple89 · 20/10/2024 23:43

I had terrible nausea and vomiting from 6-14 weeks, one hospital admission. But I tried 6 different meds over the weeks and wouldn’t give up till I found something that worked. Xonvea was the one that changed it all for me in a matter of days. Keep going back to the doctor whatever you have to do

Floam6 · 22/10/2024 15:23

Thanks all. I've been on Xonvea for 24 hours now and it's marginally better in than Cyclizine but I still feel horrendous and sick, weak, sleepy and so low and at times like my heart beat is racing. I honestly feel like I've been poisoned. I'm so fed up and just don't know what to do but keep just wishing the pregnancy would end. Is there anything else I could try? Thanks

I was given Motilium which helped, if you are offered to be rehydrated at the hospital via IV take it, it works like a miracle and you'll feel yourself again - for alittle while at least.

Get DH to pick you up some Refreshers - the chalky kind not the chews, they weirdly make you vomit taste almost pleasant. I assume they are a bit of an antacid and neutralise the stomach acid or something

Lots of sucking on ice lollies / callippos / jubblys.

You need to give time for the Xonvea to work into your system. How many are you taking per day and when?

I sympathise. It’s horrendous. I was diagnosed with HG at 7 weeks. Every time I moved I vomited. The nausea was 24/7. I’m 12 weeks now and it’s slightly improved. I’m still sick once occasionally twice a day if I’m unlucky and the nausea is still there, but I have periods where I feel reasonable. I take x2 10mg Xonvea at night. I’m attempting to go back to work at the weekend. Not sure how that is going to go but I couldn’t have even contemplated that at 7 weeks.

Singleandproud · 22/10/2024 15:30

Are you urinating normally, mine was very small volume and the colour of lucozade just before I was admitted to hospital as I was medically dehydrated (lost 25lbs in 6 days!) and when I committed it was dark green not even food as I hadn't eaten anything.

I remember wanting to sit on a bench on the way to the Drs to have a nap....I think I was probably much more unwell than I thought I was.

Floam6 · 22/10/2024 15:34

Thanks all. @Hellskitchen24 I have taken 2 at night, one in the morning and one at lunchtime.

Not much help but 20 years on, I still remember this feeling and really feel for you. It is completely debilitating. With my 1st I was living in the Middle East and continued teaching as doctors did not recognise it as a condition. I used to teach (barely) and sleep in my lunch hour. I ate a lot of ice lollies.

With my 2nd I had to ask for help from my sis who luckily was around at the time as I couldn't even go into the kitchen!

I was lucky too in that it subsided after about 16 weeks.

Floam6 · 22/10/2024 15:37

I feel like I've totally ruined my life. I have two lovely children, I should have just been happy with that and left it there. Instead I'm 40 and pregnant and feeling horrendous and like I don't even know what I was thinking considering another baby, more sleepless nights etc. I'm so sorry to write this but I can't tell anyone in real life except my husband who is lovely but doesn't really get it and is busy with work. I just want to go back to exercising and feeling good and healthy.

Thanks all. @Hellskitchen24 I have taken 2 at night, one in the morning and one at lunchtime.

Ok so maximum dose then. Normally they would ask you to start on the minimum and then build up but that’s fine. You need to give it some time.

Floam6 · 22/10/2024 15:41

@Hellskitchen24 do you think going straight to max dose could be making me feel so rough? Thanks

Not sure. Do you feel worse than you did? And are you taking them as instructed on an empty stomach?

As I said I have a HG diagnosis (was sick 5+ times a day basically any time I moved from my bed and 24/7 nausea) and only take two at night. It’s reduced my sickness to once or twice but the nausea is still there on and off. I tried an extra one in the afternoon but it didn’t do anything.

Thumberline · 22/10/2024 15:52

Have you had an IV rehydration yet? For me even ordansetron did nothing until I had been given an IV. They also offer an anti sickness injection in A&E which helped massively in my first pregnancy, my A&E said if you go in the morning they will see to it pretty quickly.

Singleandproud · 22/10/2024 15:52

Did you tell the GP how you felt emotionally as well sthe sickness? Ask them to refer you to the maternity unit for rehydration, honestly you'll feel right as rain after that drip at least for a few days giving the other medication time to work.

Floam6 · 22/10/2024 16:02

Thank you so much all for replying. I'm so grateful as I feel so low and alone. No I haven't told the GP how I feel mentally but I think I need to. I also think I should push for the IV. Thank you for the advice x
