Cervical ectropian in pregnancy

Hi all, I am 29 weeks with my second baby and this time I have had brown and pink discharge on and off throughout my entire pregnancy, which has been worrying. I have always called triage, when u I was 6 weeks I had a scan which confirmed all was fine and they said there was no cause they could see. When I’ve called since they have told me to monitor it.A couple of weeks ago I had a bit of red blood so I called and ended up being in hospital for a few hours being monitored, it was all fine but it culminated in an examination like a smear test which I found painful and caused more bleeding which was traumatic, but it did give peace ofmuvd because they diagnosed cervical ectropian as the cause and told me it’s nothing to worry about.

im still getting brown and pink discharge now, and just wondering if anyone else has had this in pregnancy and has kept the baby in until their due date? Can it cause problems, does it mean potentially and early birth? And will it go back to normal after or will I always have this bleeding?

I will speak to my midwife but would love to hear anyone’s own experience too. Thank you

No one can tell you what will happen to you.
I got this after I came off the pill, and the consultant said hormones were the cause. I needed it cauterising to stop the bleeding, and it never came back.

@DustyLee123 im not asking for people to tell me what will happen to me, I’m asking for others experiences on what happened to them in pregnancy.

I have a sneaky suspicion I have something similar.. I haven't been diagnosed though
But I bleed through (at least the whole first trimester and some on/ off slight spotting 2nd and 3rd) with all my pregnancies. With absolutely no indication of where the bleeding is coming from within an ultrasound.
Carried both my children to full term (the others were early mcs and one still cooking)

Reading up on it all, there is absolutely no indication that it should affect your ability to carry to full term nor should it impact your ability to deliver. Hope this eases your mind some x

@LaTable thanks for letting me know your experience, and sorry for your losses. I had 2 miscarriages before having my first baby, and with the successful one so I was worried when this first happened but it’s good to have a diagnosis.

did your bleeding stop when you weren’t pregnant? Glad you hear you got to full term. X

I got it diagnosed at 16 weeks when they swabbed my cervix and I had brown/light pink spotting for a few days, but nothing since then (I am in 28 week now).

The cervical ectropian is not going to cause an issue, I have been told, but the problem is that whenever there is a bleed you won't know if it is just that or something else that needs to be checked out.

@Peonyyyy all back to normal post pregnancies, yes x

Hi,
I had this in my first pregnancy, with red bleeding throughout. When I was 36 weeks I started passing clots. They kept me in for a few hours for monitoring and baby was fine. A few hours after getting home it happened again so I went back to hospital. They ended up inducing me when I returned, however this was more because of the stress the bleeding was causing me and they didn’t want it to have an impact on baby. I now have a beautiful energetic 5 y/o. Try not to worry yourself and keep doing what you’re doing by going to hospital whenever you have a bleed.
wishing you all the best x

I have this, due to having treatment following an abnormal smear, the ectropian itself whilst worrying wasn't what caused problems with my cervix, the consultant was never worried about the ectropian other than when it bled I needed an anti d injection due to having a negative blood type.

Cervical ectropion is very common (usually caused by hormones!) and it is indeed harmless Smile

It shouldn’t affect you carrying to term as it’s just an overgrowth of the cells lining your cervix, but it doesn’t affect the actual function of your cervix. I’d say over half of the women I examine daily have some degree of cervical ectropion, some of them have no idea because they have no bleeding with it. You may be bleeding if you have a wider area of ectropion than some women, and also because your blood volume is increased due to pregnancy. It’s possible that things will return to normal once you’ve had your baby as your hormones will settle. If you were on hormonal contraception before, or plan to be after you deliver, it might stay there but it may not cause you any problems.

Is there anything in particular that’s triggering the bleeding, e.g. sex or having a bowel movement?

Peonyyyy · 20/10/2024 21:59

Thank you everyone.

@WetBandits thank you, are you a midwife? It was triggered by sex a few times earlier in this pregnancy, but also sometimes there seemed to be no reason. The bleeding I’ve had on and off these last few weeks seem to have been when I’ve done a lot of walking and playing with my son who is 3 x

Sexual health nurse, so I see many a cervix on the average day!

That can also do it, basically anything that will cause extra blood flow to the lower half of your body. I haven’t had an ectropion during this pregnancy (then again I haven’t had any internal exams whilst I’ve been pregnant, so I don’t know!) but I have had an ectropion in the past and I used to get spotting after I’d been to the gym.
