NT 2.6mm at 40 years old - panicking

I had my 12 week scan yesterday and the NT was 2.6mm which the midwife said is in the normal range but I think it’s on the high end. I’m worried that at age 40 with this measurement I will be classed as high risk and have to go for invasive testing.
I’m not worried about the actual procedure, I’ve had it before following a 6mm NT and the baby ended up being very poorly (not downs/edwards/patau) and I delivered him at 20 weeks.

I suppose I’m just really scared of going through it all again. Has anyone had a similar NT measurement at 40 and come back low risk.

No @Herewegoagain8 but they know your previous medical history? How about a NIPT test?

Mine was 2.3 and of course I kept googling as everyone else's seem to be 1. Something. Mine came back as low risk 1 in 5000 and 1 in 2250 or something similar. I have my 20 wk scan next week so hoping all goes OK. Hopefully you get your results quickly x

@SassyRoseSeal I assume they know my history as it’s in my notes. I considered NIPT but it wouldn’t have shown the condition my baby had in the previous pregnancy so it didn’t seem worth it, I thought if there was a problem I would go straight for the CVS.

After I was clear for the three main trisomies last time it took over 6 weeks for them to come back with the further results, just knowing I might have to do all that again is terrifying.

I'm 41 (42 on due date) and paid for the private advanced NIPT which is not offered on the NHS. It tests for 70 different things, not just the standard 3.

I had this done before my 12 week scan as I knew for a fact my results from the standard combined test would be bumped to high risk just because of my age and didn't want the extra stress. The NIPT came back low risk for everything.

Anything up to 3.5mm is considered normal range for the NT measurement so you're well within that but, yes. It's likely your age and history will factor into the results.

@sel2223 thanks for your reply. Yes I think you’re right and it will definitely come back as high risk so I think I’ll just have to prepare myself. It’s the waiting that’s the worst.

I would have paid privately for a NIPT but unfortunately I know it wouldn’t have put my mind at rest. The problem in my previous pregnancy wasn’t a named syndrome but a very rare unbalanced translocation of chromosomes with no records of anyone being born with that particular problem- it simply wouldn’t have shown up on anything but a full array from an invasive test so looks like I’m heading for a CVS again.

My baby's NT was similar (I was 38 in pregnancy) and did come back higher risk for downs, I think largely because of my age. Had the NIPT and that was low risk/clear, gave birth a couple of weeks ago and he's healthy as can be

Normal range is up to 3.5 so you’re well within it.
