Cabbage

Hi, I can’t remember what I ate when I was pregnant first time round. I of course avoided the obviously big no no like Brie or salami.

however, I’ve just read today that we also can’t have cabbage when pregnant? I’ve had a salad with coleslaw yesterday and both salad and coleslaw has shredded raw cabbage.

is this true? When I Google is it safe to eat coleslaw it says yes. But when I Google is it safe to eat cabbage it says no.

please help 😂

What does the NHS website say?

Ffs, step away from Google. What do you think cabbage will do to you. You can eat Brie, most if not all in the shops here is pasteurised.

FanofLeaves · 17/10/2024 13:18

I didn’t avoid any ‘no no’ food when pregnant. Except pate because it’s horrible.

the info is out there but up to you weigh up the minuscule risk. Of cabbage, I’m not sure what risk there would be at all. Don’t even bother to read any list that’s written outside of the U.K.

The minuscule risk from raw fruit and veg isn’t worth worrying about.

Shop bought products are fine. If you make your own coleslaw just wash the veg well first.

This is not correct. You can only eat brie and other mouldy rind cheeses if you cook them hot first.
Follow NHS advice only OP (assuming you're in the UK). Food safety standards vary across countries so something that is safe here might not be in Australia, etc).

Nhs doesn't say to avoid cabbage

You can have soft blue and mould ripened cheeses if they have been heated first

Salami and other cured meats are also OK if heated e.g. on pizza

Did Google explain why to avoid cabbage OP?
i can’t think of any reason at all except to say to wash it very carefully if eating raw in coleslaw. Pregnant women are 10 times more likely than the general population to get listeria according to the website RCOG (Royal college of obs & gynae). Listeria can live in soil so contamination is a risk as is toxoplasmosis

There’s advice about cabbage only because it makes you and baby gassy eg when breastfeeding.

Jellybelly888 · 17/10/2024 21:40

Cabbage is fine and really good for you. Full of iron and vitamins - I’ve eaten tonnes of it in this pregnancy and I’m almost 20 weeks! I did in my previous pregnancy too.

Also, good old cabbage leaves are a godsend cold out of the fridge in your bra when breastfeeding and have engorged breasts 💚
