Sudden growth increase

Currently 31+5. Had bump measured at 28+5 and was measuring just above 50th centile. Today’s measurement was off the chart, have been referred for a growth scan. Anyone who has been in a similar position able to tell me a reason for the sudden growth? Thanks!

This happened to me and I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I was able to control it with diet and my son was born perfectly healthy. It actually turned out that the bump measurement and scans were wrong and he was a lot smaller than they thought. Growth scans had him at the 90th percentile until shorty before I gave birth. He’s actually at the 50th percentile and has consistently stayed there his whole life (16 months old now). So there is a chance your baby isn’t actually as big as they think.

I could have written your post yesterday! 50th percentile at 28 weeks, off the charts at my midwife appointment yesterday (31+5). Had a growth scan today and baby was confirmed to still be 50th percentile. My midwife did say the measuring isn't super accurate and can be thrown off by things like their position

@Strawberrycheesecake7 when the midwife routinely checked your urine was all ok? Mine was today with nothing showing any sign of gestational diabetes. Just curious as to whether urine will always show it.

@EzioAuditore fingers crossed this is the case for me, too!

There was never any sign of it in routine urine tests. I was diagnosed with a blood test after a glucose drink. I was routinely tested 28 weeks because I have a family history of diabetes, but I didn’t have it then. I wasn’t diagnosed until quite late on (I think about 34 weeks), when I was retested because of the growth increase.

My fundal height a month ago was off the charts. Growth scan revealed polyhydramnios (GD test was negative) so it could be that.

With my first child, FH kept flitting between too small and too big. Nothing was diagnosed, and he came out slightly above average - now a healthy 3 yo.

@Strawberrycheesecake7 I was sent for a growth scan on Monday as my bump was measuring big at midwife appointment and scan confirmed baby an booked me in for urgent glucose test today.
In my head was a bit miffed to have the test today because of the fasting and travel to hospital ect when a few weeks ago I had the test and results were fine. (28 weeks)
But now reading your story you actually developed gestational diabetes in a few weeks after having the 28 weeks test.
Did you have any other symptoms?
I get my results tomorrow x

I never had any symptoms. I never would have known I had gestational diabetes if it wasn't for the growth increase that turned out to be inaccurate anyway. I hope your test comes back negative but try not to worry too much if you do end up having it. It's only really dangerous if it's not controlled. I was able to control it through diet alone and my son was born completely healthy.

Those measurements are not always accurate, but when this happened to me it was due to excess fluid.

@Strawberrycheesecake7 thanks for advising!
So pleased all was well and no complications with you and your son.
It's my first baby and I am terrified if birthing as it us let alone having to worry about gestational diabetes. Like you said I've tested now so should it come back I have then il have to get on with it and control it as per there advise and hopefully have the same outcome you did xx
