Help Spicy food and Implantation

Please be kind.
I’ve just had a FET.
On way home, very hungry, stopped at a greggs and ate two of their wedges before realising they were spicy and an egg sandwich that I didn’t realise had turmeric in (the choice was limited!)
Im now really sad that I’ve ruined everything.
Does anyone have any knowledge around implantation and sprice?
I'm so upset with myself and feel like I’ve ruined everything.
(also not sure which forum I should be posting this?)

Understand you're worried - but you shouldn't. Think of all those one night stands that produced babies during a booze fueled night out!

Halfscottish · 14/10/2024 16:54

People taking drugs like coke or heroin get pregnant on a daily basis (sadly) - you’ll be ok with a lil spice! Good luck.

Karmaisaguyonthechiefs · 14/10/2024 16:56

It’s easy to become worried but think all
those cultures that regularly eat spicy food and it’s not an issue

MumChp · 14/10/2024 16:57

No way. It's not an issue.

dizzydizzydizzy · 14/10/2024 16:58

As PP said, lots of countries live of spicy food. It's not a problem.

renoleno · 14/10/2024 16:58

Christ, India is one of the most overpopulated countries in the world. Spice and turmeric features in every meal in MUCH larger quantities than a Greggs meals - so it's obviously not affecting fertility!

CameronStrike · 14/10/2024 16:58

What makes you think spice affects implantation?

Okayornot · 14/10/2024 17:01

I don't think there is any evidence of spicy food or turmeric affecting implantation.

There is however evidence that a good laugh after FET can help implantation, So you should put your feet up and watch a funny film (I recommend Zoolander).

Just to add that India was the 2nd country in the world to have a successful IVF baby, in 1978. It has a long history of IVF and high success rates in the world - all on a high spice and turmeric diet. So definitely doesn't impact FET.

Thank you everyone (think the meds definitely aren’t helping)!

This is what I was wondering. I haven’t seen any evidence for that at all.

I completely understand your concerns, the hours and days following an embryo transfer can be incredibly stressful and it is easy to become convinced that everything you do or don't do could cause an implantation failure.
I am currently nearly 26 weeks pregnant with our first longed-for IVF baby and I was very paranoid after the transfer. The doctor who performed the transfer was very reassuring and advised me that there was little I could do in the days immediately following the transfer that would either help or hinder implantation, though he did advise against sex or the use of saunas or hot tubs immediately afterwards. He told me that rest was unnecessary as I was not going to accidentally shake the embryo loose by normal physical activity, in fact his advice was to go out and get on with life as normally as I could as being happy and relaxed was more likely to be a recipe for success. His only advice regarding food and drink was to follow the advice on the NHS website for pregnant women and to follow a pregnancy-safe diet even before I knew if the transfer had been successful. The list of foods and drinks to avoid is very short and managable and I have seen a number of reputable websites which debunk the idea that spicy food can in any way damage fertility or cause miscarriage so this is definitely nothing to worry about.
Very best of luck!

No it won't have any effect, you can still eat spices and spicy food in pregnancy don't worry

Google! It was at the back of my mind that I’d read something about spices and I googled it…(I know better than to google and I did it anyway 😣).

I thought you were gunna say you ate a vindaloo or something... but wedges from Greggs? 😂😂 either way, I think you'll be fine

Gosh I eat very spicy (south indian) food almost daily and I did during my pregnancy and breastfeeding - baby was perfectly ok and she now likes spicy food too!

liveforsummer · 15/10/2024 07:08

I've never even heard a myth or old wives take about not eating spice, let alone any genuine advice. Can't imagine what the reasoning might be but it's definitely not true. Turmeric actually has lots of health benefits (however probably not on the tiny amounts used in greggs wedges lol)

This is what I was wondering. I haven’t seen any evidence for that at all.

There’s some evidence that suggests turmeric is a blood thinner so can make the womb lining less thick - but you’d have to be consuming large quantities of the stuff. IIRC it’s also used in traditional medicine as a ‘thinner’ and ‘drier’ in general (haldi dood is a traditional cold remedy in parts of India for example)
