I am floored with nausea. 8w 3d. Not been sick once but so nauseas all day. It's unbearable.

I'm going to have to go on anti sickness meds. But whats the deal with these? I feel everyone is against them. Why? Just looking for positives and negatives from you all please. Thanks

Definitely contact your GP! I was prescribed cyclizine first but it didn't work for me, now on Xonvea. I'm still sick but not as much.

Alwaystired2023 · 10/10/2024 17:43

I took them with both pregnancies - they helped somewhat. Not sure that everyone is against them, don't feel you can't try, you shouldn't have to suffer - the sickness is just awful

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 10/10/2024 17:44

I never felt like everyone was against them.

I found cyclizine worked well for me, but be aware it will probably knock you out for the first couple of days. I got used to the drowsiness very quickly though.

coverp · 10/10/2024 17:46

I had to try several different options before finding one that worked. Major downside is severe drowsiness with some - I wasn't allowed to drive so had to be signed off from work.

I started taking Xonvea yesterday and already feeling a lot better. Gone from vomiting multiple times to not at all. Still feel a bit nauseous! I slept wonderfully but it was a bit harder to wake up and I've been noticeably sleepier.

I've taken meds in both my pregnancies. I found the key thing is to take them regularly - they have to build up in your body to work properly, so don't wait until you feel sick again to take another dose. I found they made me tired initially then I got used to them. I ended up on a combination of cyclizine and prochloperazine, and also took a short course of metoclopramide. I've heard great things about Xonvea. Good luck!

MotiRoller · 10/10/2024 18:08

NHS are against them because they cost money and the NHS is institutionally misogynist and believes women should suffer. Many midwives believe it too. I went on Xonvea and am very grateful for it.

Many people know of a thalidomide baby and remember that was used widely as anti sickness medication for 5 years before the connection was made that it had caused problems.

Nejnej · 10/10/2024 19:41

I really struggled with nausea, vomiting wasn't much of an issue but anti sickness meds allowed me to function. Cyclizine worked well for me.

They're not officially tested in pregnancy, as obviously you can't get permission to test drugs on pregnant people - but there's lots of evidence from the people who have taken them safely in pregnancy

Sleeponit · 10/10/2024 20:47

Thank you. Anyone who's taken them.. can you drive still??

I was fine to drive. Not for the first couple of days and they really did knock me for six. But I took two or three a day for the whole of both my pregnancies and the drowsiness only lasted a couple of days for me each time.

Posithor · 10/10/2024 21:02

I've had to take them in 2 pregnancies - cyclizine and prochlorperazine - I couldn't drive on either they made me SO drowsy but everyone is different. I really had no choice I had HG.

LittleMsSunny · 10/10/2024 21:14

@MotiRoller On the whole the NHS is worried about cost of everything in general but the cost of anti sickness medicines is not one of the costs that cause the problems. Cyclizine costs £4 for 100 tablets so really cheap.

I was prescribed cyclizine today for sickness and I am 12 weeks pregnant. The GP told me there were safe and I asked how they new that, he said Cyclizine is the first line drug for sickness in pregnancy because it has shown to cause the least harm. He showed me the guidelines that stated this so I feel very reassured that they wont harm my baby.

GP also mentioned things like herbal teas (ginger) and ginger biscuits could help?

I have found fizzy drinks also help, could you try something natural first if your worried about tablets?

I took ALL the anti sickness meds in my pregnancies.
I'll be honest, they didn't actually stop the nausea, just the vomiting, but definitely allowed me to function somewhat once I'd found the right cocktail.
You have my deepest sympathies, it's bloody miserable. Just remember, it might feel an age now but it doesn't last forever and you will feel 'normal' again.

507am · 10/10/2024 21:57

I was so nervous about asking my GP for them but he prescribed them straight away and was really kind about it saying I shouldn't have to suffer. I only took them at night and still fondly remember how well I slept on them! For me they didn't get rid of the nausea (although obviously I didn't take a massive dose) but they did mostly stop me vomiting and enabled me to function somewhat. It's so so awful sickness. Sympathies.

Ros2023 · 10/10/2024 23:14

I am in Xonvea and it has really helped. They do make me feel really sleepy which is one down side but I couldn’t take feeling sick anymore. I couldn’t not function it was awful!

Alwaystired2023 · 10/10/2024 23:15

I could drive on cyclizine just fine, but the next level one (I can't remember the name) I could it was too strong
