PRAM HELP!

x1994x · 08/10/2024 18:00

I'm expecting my first baby in January so starting to look at prams.

Ickle bubba is a brand I keep seeing everywhere, reviews online rate it 5/5 but some friends said they returned their travel system as it seemed cheap and just overall not great to them.

I was thinking of getting the pram in the link below, has anyone got any experience with this brand or could recommend something? Ideally nothing over £600!

Depends on your lifestyle

if you are in a city honestly don’t bother with a travel system. I didn’t listen and it was a semi expensive mistake…,

I would get a newborn- 1 car seat (maxi cosi type thing) and an ultralight pram

when baby turns 1 get the next stage up car seat (I think it’s 1-4 years ish) as gift from someone or get one yourself..

prams I recommend

yoyo for resale value
le clerc for baby comfort
bugaboo butterfly v stylish more comfortable than yoyo less than Leclerc

you can get basinette attachments for these Leclerc is the most sturdy / plushy. I hated the yoyo basinette so didn’t get a yoyo.

and I’d get the basinette second hand - they barely get used. We did and ours looked brand new and was £50 instead of £200

Be careful about buying a travel system - sometimes the car seats that come with them are not that great. If you a pram / buggy sorted, you can usually then get a decent car seat separately with adapters for the pram. For example, the nuna car seat puts baby in quite a poor position (in my opinion). Joie, maxi cosi, avianaut, britax all do better infant carriers which fit on any pram with adapters.

I did not know you can get an adapter for prams for other car seats! When we had my son I knew little about car seats. He’s now 3.5 and still rear facing in an Axkid as I took a lot of time to learn about car seat safety. We are now due baby 2 and I’m apprehensive about using the same car seat as before (from Ickle bubba travel system), so I’ve been looking at a Britax seat but felt like the fact that I couldn’t put it on the pram frame was a barrier. Any advice on where to get an adapter from?

I always highly recommend anything by Cosatto. I promise I don't work for them! 4yr guarantee with excellent customer service. We are expecting our third baby any day now and will still be using the travel system we bought for DC1 6.5yrs ago. It's still in great condition except for the adjustable handlebar on the pram is a bit broken so it's hard to adjust. We got a new raincover and new carrycot mattress under the warranty before we had DC2 and we have just bought another mattress for DC3 given it's obviously well out of warranty now. Our smaller buggy is also still in use about 3.5yrs later, still in great condition and just got a new raincover for that one via the warranty too.

My favourite every was my stokke Xplory it lasted me for many years and I still use it now for my little one when I take him out alone.
It's was given to me by a friend so this is the 4th baby to use it.

Examples of how useful the John Lewis appointment was:

  • the staff member advised against the expensive pram my daughter was intending to buy, pointing out that it would not be an ideal fit with their very urban lifestyle and also said they had a lot of after sale complaints about it
  • she suggested a cheaper, lighter pram and pointed out that they are expensive to buy 2nd hand as they last so well *she suggested, however, that it was worth buying the bassinet for the pram 2nd hand as they are only used for a few months and are therefore still in excellent condition - my daughter did this and got a massive reduction by buying a bassinet on Facebook marketplace that is virtually unused
  • she talked my daughter out of buying a massively expensive cot *she was able to advise on how many items of clothing a new baby needs and what sizes to buy *she explained all about baby sleeping bags, swaddles, etc and advised what togs to buy and what baby should wear underneath
  • she knew the local hospitals and what items they did and did not provide for use after the birth.

I would say she saved my daughter a significant amount of money

wow thank you so so much for taking the time to type this out! I will research each one you mentioned as haven't heard of any!

It might be worth asking on the car seat group i mentioned earlier up the thread. I'm 50% sure someone said that britax uses the same adapters as maxi cosi but if you post your buggy and the car seat you are considering, I'm sure someone will know. One of the admins will probably even sell the right adapters.

@Livingonhope YoYo has the newborn pack option as well as the bassinet. We went with the newborn pack as it folds down with the buggy :)

I’m really rate the Leclerc as it lies fully flat and their customer service is out of control good if there are any problems.
but all 3 are excellent choices for living in cities / taking as hand luggage on flights

I don't think Ickle Bubba are that great honestly. Cheap parts, and not priced to match.

In that kind of price range I would look at Maxi Cosi, Joie, Nuna, Silver Cross, and Cybex Balios S Lux is great. Cosatto - I think their prams are good? Their all-stage car seats are not great it seems.

Beware of tiny wheels, unless you are looking at a microfold like the Babyzen.

Joie in particular tend to do cheap really well. They know where it matters to spend and they don't skimp on those parts. So you get a product which has a lot of the quality and features of higher end models, but may miss some extra functions or touches, like it might have a simple design and they might use cheaper fabrics, which are less important than for example the hinges and clips. What you find sometimes on the more fashion oriented brands is that they have premium fabrics and pretty designs, but cheap moving parts which don't last. Also, Joie prams tend to come with a raincover and car seat adapter which is probably £60+ you'll save compared to models where they aren't included.

Check StrollerWorkshop on youtube for reviews as well. They are really helpful although they don't have every model on there.

Beware of bundles - they only save you money if you were going to get all of those exact extras anyway. Sometimes you can get a good deal if for example there is a very high end car seat you want. But a lot of the time, you'll save money by getting car seat and buggy separately then just buying a universal changing bag/footmuff/etc. And don't bother with a parasol. They never face the right way and you will curse the stupid thing then give up.

Raincover and footmuff - these are worth getting the official one if they have special attachments to zip/clip on. If not, get a universal one.

Most pushchairs these days can take a universal or multi-brand adapter which will take a Maxi Cosi, Cybex, Britax, Besafe, Joie or Nuna car seat.

@verabarbleen sorry to jump on this but I'm in the same dilemma! what joie/ nuna would you recommend please??

I've got the Joie Chrome and it's the pram I'd recommend everytime

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 10/10/2024 22:24

Honestly look secondhand! Moat travel systems do not keep their value. If you're worried about cot part being used you could always just replace that for new. You'll save hundreds and can get a good system for a quarter of the price.

We had a uppababy vista and i liked it. But we used it for a year max before swapping to an out n about nipper. In hindsight i'd go straight for the nipper now. Best buggy i've ever come accross absolutely love it. Cheap too compared to most. Downside is its not parent facing. But tbh that is such a short term concern anyway.

Note alot of car seats that come with travel systems aren't the safest. You cna get adapters for most car seats for most buggies. So i'd research the safest car seat first and buy that separately. Look for swedish plus tested car seats.

Tattletail · 10/10/2024 22:37

I can't recommend but I can say avoid a yoyo, unless you live somewhere where there are beautiful smooth pristine pavements. It is marketed at Cosmo life but honestly the slightest bit of grass, gravel or bump in the road causes it to come to an abrupt halt. I've had to fix the wheel 3-4 times due to it buckling. There is also limited space underneath and the straps just seem to slip and loosen. I can't wait to sling it in the dump!

Runkle · 10/10/2024 22:39

Highly recommend Bugaboo. Also had first baby in month of January, we had the Bugaboo Fox. Really high quality, so sturdy but so easy to push and nippy considering the size. Could push 2 year old with 1 hand.
The Dragonfly looks good if you're more urban than rural. The Silvercross Tide looks nice.
Definitely wait for black Friday!

Interesting! We've not found this to be a problem and have run ours over loads of different surfaces. Was/Is yours a YoYo2? 🤔
