Hi all just feeling overwhelmed and don’t know where to turn!
in my last pregnancy I had low iron but managed ok with the iron tablets , this pregnancy I have been complaining to my midwife and consultant about the same symptoms I had last time and they kept putting it off saying that my levels were low but ok for pregnancy . Fast forward I’m now 37 weeks pregnant and supposed to be having a c section in 2 weeks time . Last week I had a different midwife who finally took me seriously and ordered more bloods and I’ve now been told I need to have an iron transfusion this Thursday and one the week after . My iron is low and my ferritin is low I’m terrified and so upset this could have all been avoided .
does anyone have any positive stories on iron transfusions in the third trimester especially before a elective c section? X

Yes I had one. It took maybe forty minutes, didn't hurt (scratch when cannula went in) and felt great afterwards. Highly recommend them! They're expensive for the NHS so being pregnant is probably your only chance of getting one so grab it with both hands. Unless you lose a lot of blood at delivery you'll be set up with great iron stores for years, win win.

I've had three or four iron infusions over the years. It's nothing to get worked up over in the slightest OP. Perfectly safe and the only discomfort will come from the small needle which you will only feel for a second.

And then three weeks later, you'll feel way better than you do now.

Don't worry!

They're no big deal at all. I had one post partum due to a huge haemorrhage. Felt tons better!

What are you terrified about OP? Great you're getting it done to build you up before delivery. Depending on the type, they can be around 1000 pounds a pop so they'd only usually end up giving them towards the end of your pregnancy if oral iron hadn't worked, so I don't think it could have been avoided. Best of luck with it all hopefully you'll be feeling loads better really soon!

I had one in my second pregnancy because my ferritin was rock bottom and I was about 37 weeks before anyone noticed.

It was awesome! Procedure itself really straightforward and I felt incredible afterwards.
