8 week old vaccines - baby screaming in pain and inconsolable

Baby boy had his 8 week vaccines at 10am this morning, was fine at the time but now is screaming in pain. Never heard him cry like it before and he seems to be in a lot of pain and completely inconsolable. It's awful.
Did anyone else experience this or does he need help?

Aww bless him. Has he had his doses of paracetamol?

Cookieland · 04/10/2024 16:47

Have they had any pain meds, is the injection site looking sore / anything rubbing in that area? Any rashes or swellings…just thinking about allergies?!

If you can’t console them and it’s been over an
hour with complete none stop crying call 111.

Calpol?

Ohfuckrucksack · 04/10/2024 16:56

Persistent prolonged crying (2-3hrs) is a known but uncommon (1in 1000) adverse reaction to Dtap vaccination.

It should be recorded so you should contact your GP to let them know or complete a yellow card

Lots of comfort/cuddles - contact your GP to ask about which painkillers can be used with this sort of reaction.

PROTRACTED INCONSOLABLE CRYING AND SCREAMING

Clinical Description
Persistent crying has been commonly noted after DPT immunization and appears to be a reaction to vaccination. The usual course of events is as follows: the child receives the immunization and cries briefly in association with the vaccination. The crying following immunization is short-lived and the child returns to normal behavior. Then, sometime later, usually within 2 to 8 hours, the child starts to cry. The crying is persistent and frequently inconsolable. Occasionally, the cry is episodic in nature throughout a 24-hour period. Crying of this nature is common in infancy, and many causes are suspected.
A more unusual, high-pitched crying also has been reported after DPT immunization. This cry has been characterized as screaming or "a cerebral cry," and parents identify it by saying they "never heard their child cry like this before."

Have you administered calpol as recommended? The 8 week ones were by far the worst of the bunch for us.

bk1981 · 04/10/2024 19:49

My daughter was like that with the first set of jabs but much better by day two.

Butterflysunshine01 · 04/10/2024 22:50

My LO was like this in the evening of his first vaccines, I was so upset for him, I couldn’t sleep- he finally exhausted himself and slept almost through the night, hiccuping in his sleep, calpol didn’t really help apart from helping him to sleep. The next day he was more himself, but I agree about the cry being one I hadn’t heard before. Thank god the next two sets of vaccines were much better. Was awful !! I hope he settles soon xx

Orangeroses243 · 05/10/2024 09:32

What vaccinations did you baby have?
Sorry to hear your little boy was so upset and hope he is feeling better today? X

My daughter had a strong reaction to the menB at 4 months. She screamed inconsolably without pause from 4 am until 8pm and the on and off inconsolably for the next 2 days.
We spoke to our HV, had 3 GP appointments and then were sent to paeds over 8h. Paeds ruled out anything sinister there was just something in the jabs that made her feel particularly awful. She had her 1 year jabs individually which was how we found out it was the menB as she did the same but slightly less intense. At the time of her 4 month jabs she has had uncontrolled reflux and undiagnosed food allergies both of which the paediatrician we saw sort both out.

meganna · 05/10/2024 10:15

I assume you have given calpol as recommended?

I always gave calpol for a few days after vaccinations, as I know how sore they can be from having them myself!

imverynosey · 05/10/2024 10:54

How is your baby now?

imverynosey · 05/10/2024 13:01

My baby has her 12 week ones in a few days. Dreading it :(

Superscientist · 05/10/2024 15:55

@imverynosey even my daughter screaming for 3 days ... I would do it again in a heartbeat and she's had every vaccine since without issues. It's a couple of days maximum and protects against so much.
My uncle died aged 8 having spent his whole life in hospital due to a heart defect caused by my gran contracting rubella in pregnancy. It always puts things into perspective for me
