Positive pregnancy test, now bleeding, what does it mean?

Hello everyone,

I had a positive home pregnancy test last Thursday, then a positive blood test. Today I have some heavy vaginal bleeding, does it mean that I am having a miscarriage? Can it be normal? (as I am taking Progesterone).

I will see the Dr. this afternoon but I am super stressed now and keen to hear the experiences of other women. Thanks.

It can mean anything. It could be a very early loss sometimes called a chemical pregnancy where it's lost just after a positive test. A lot of women won't have even realised they were pregnant. It could be completely normal too. Just try to stay busy until you see the Dr. Good luck!

Thanks @Superscientist , much appreciated. I am trying to keep my stress level under control until later this afternoon. I am just wondering if other women had a similar experience...

Unfortunately it’s very common and nothing can be done. It could be fine; but if it’s heavy; it is more likely an early miscarriage. In my experience they won’t scan you that early on, you’ll just have to see what happens and test again in a week or so. I couldn’t even get referred for a scan with heavy bleeding at 11 weeks (which was a miscarriage) so I’m impressed you’ve got a doctors appointment-unless you’re not in the Uk.

Thanks@Peonies12
I am based in Germany so I guess that the doctors here are a bit more flexible. I just came back from the Dr. and after she did an ultrasound she said that she can still see this ´embryo bubble´ (apologies, not sure how it´s called in English) and she says that it seems like I am still pregnant, but she is indeed concerned by the heavy bleeding. I took a blood test to see if the HcG levels are still raising and for now I should stay in bed and relax for the next couple of days. :/

The postcode lottery in early pregnancy is unreal.
I had a miscarriage at 10 weeks. Offered a scan the same day I didn't have childcare so went the day after, was seen in A&e in between time due to heavy bleeding, quickly triaged and seen by the nurse to have bloods done. In and out in 45 minutes despite a 4h average wait time when we arrived in a and e. I then had weekly bloods until my HCG was normal again. I had a choice of 2 hospitals, my friend had a miscarriage in similar circumstances but was at the other hospital and had an awful experience and was in and out of a &e for weeks and weeks because of lack of support from the EPU.

The care doesn't change the outcome but it does impact how you reflect back on the experience. It is such a disgrace that care and compassion isn't at the centre of every woman's care as they go through potential pregnancy loss. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience
