Induction at 37 weeks 10th percentile

Hello,

I would like some advice please as I am pregnant with my first baby. I have had a growth scan at 31 weeks and baby’s weight was 23% percentile. I had another one at 37 weeks + 4 days because I feel her movements are less strong than before and percentile dropped to 10%. The doctor told me I need induction the day after urgently. I called the day after for them to tell me there are no beds available and that I should call later. They called me to say there are still no beds available but that I should come for a doctor to see me. When I saw the doctor (another one) he actually said that there is no issue with growth. He verified the flow to the brain and through the cord and said as for today baby is fine and we can skip induction today but he can schedule me for induction tomorrow… he said according to him induction is not necessary and that I may come everyday for monitoring if i have concerns about movements and come for a scan in 2 weeks. So basically they are throwing the ball in my court. Now I don’t know what to do, do I wait or do I go for induction tomorrow? How can we go from “ you need urgent induction to you can come and we monitor you and check again in two weeks” . I am lost, i have to give them an answer as to accepting induction or not by tomorrow 8.30…

Hi there it's a labour ward midwife. 1 in 3 women in England are now induced (for all sorts of reasons). Only a very small percentage end up with a category 1 emergency Caesarean (and many of cat 1 Caesareans are so well handled that most of the stress is felt by the team). I have also seen more than a few of unexpected haemorrhages during an elective CS. OP needs to go with her gut feeling (as well as medical advice)

Hi there it's a labour ward midwife again. Yes, recovery after a Caesarean is harder. I suggest you either Google up positive birth stories or get a Positive Birth Book. It might give you some ideas you can utilise in your labour. I would also recommend a TENS machine, they come incredibly useful in my experience. I hope it helps and good luck!

Hi, hope all goes well for you. Really sorry that you have had such poor midwife support and had to fight for a c section.
I've experienced some appalling midwifes sadly. Fortunately neither of them during the births of my children!

Really helpful advice for a woman who is already 41 weeks pregnant and has made a difficult decision. 🙄

Best of luck @Isma23. This sounds like a good decision for you in the circumstances and well done for advocating for yourself. You may be pleasantly surprised by C section recovery - I was.

Kosenrufugirl · 25/10/2024 17:30

Apologies, I thought I was replying to the original OP thread on at 37 weeks. Best wishes for your CS tomorrow.

I was feeling very freaked out when I was signing the consent form but that feeling passed and my c section was smooth and quick. Your recovery might be straightforward or it might take time, but you don't have guarantees with vaginal birth either so don't stress about that. The main point is you and baby are fine. Good luck! 💞

Oh OP, you've been through the wars. Wishing you rest and an opening in the schedule for you soon. It won't be long now 💐

RedRobyn2021 · 26/10/2024 07:46

OP you can ask for another midwife, she sounds absolutely horrible

What a joke that they pressured you into this induction under the guise that baby is in danger and now they're telling you that you aren't a priority for a C-Section.

This system are truly toxic

Having your baby at the end of it aren't all that matters, you matter too. I'm so sorry.

I am going for my c section, thank you ladies for all your support🤍

Aww send us an update Op. Good luck. Ask them to lower your screen as the baby is born - if that's for you. It was the best moment of my life.

Hello ladies,

our baby girl was born on 26th of october by c section. She was out in 1 min and was given to her daddy. As for me, I had complications, I lost 2l of blood.. and had to have a blood transfusion. Apparently I may have endometriosis, the surgeon does not understand yet why this happened. My delivery was very traumatic. I went from
being the happiest woman when I first saw her to thinking I will die and leave my baby girl
and husband alone. I heard how the surgeons were panicked and calling for other surgeons for help. I also saw the faces of the anesthesists and all the nice and relaxed people who welcomed me to the theatre, change with worry on their faces…

I don’t regret having a c section at all, apparently my ombilical cord was wrapped on her body three times! And a vaginal birth would have been impossible, they also found meconium inside so that decision was the best for my baby. As for me I need to recover and rest (not easy when I have mastisis).

thank you all for your messages and support throughout these final weeks of my pregnancy. Sending a lot of love.

Hi there, it's a labour ward midwife. If your baby was born at 2.8 kg at 37 weeks there was no intrauterine growth restriction. There might have been other reasons why the Consultant recommended a CS, however intrauterine growth restriction is not one of them. In my experience, some Consultants are more likely to offer a CS even though they are all meant to sing from a same page. A CS is not a terribly nice operation.

What on earth are you talking about? My baby was just under 3k at term and the placenta was the most heavily calcified that the midwives had seen. Very much IUGR even though she was a good weight and born healthy.

I think you should wait until your baby is ready tbh

They've really put you through it the last few weeks, I feel sorry for you. You don't have to have induction or C-section, your baby with come imminently and your outcomes are much better if you just let things happen.

Also to say my first DD didn't come until 12 days past my due date.. the due date is pretty much obsolete, nobody has a crystal ball to determine when a baby will be ready. Only 5% of babies actually come on their due date, did you know that? Yet we all fixate on it

Honestly you need to keep these opinions to yourself. Sometimes it's necessary to get the baby out. I'm all for natrual and yes birth is generally overmedicalised but sometimes intervention is needed. I say this having had a perfect homebirth with my first but genuinely needing to induce my second. Its dangerous for you to to encourage women to ignore doctors entirely. Use your brain and advocate for yourself, absolutely.

Olika · 01/11/2024 18:44

Congratulations!! Sorry to hear about your complications. Wishing you a speedy recovery. 💞

Thack · 01/11/2024 20:21

Congratulations OP!
I'm sorry this whole process has been so traumatic. I'm glad you are ok (as can be).

I forget the name but you can ask for a debrief/chat about everything that went on with the hospital. It might help to consider that later.

I hope you can get some rest 💐 mastitis is bloomin' awful.
