Morning,

I have not long turned 40 and currently have two DC aged 5 and nearly 8. DH and I always wanted 3 DC and for the past 3 years had been trying to get pregnant with the third (two mc since DC no.2 and one MC before DC no.1)

Anyway, around 6 months ago we decided to give up on our hopes of DC3 and have went down the route of not trying and not preventing.
Iv had annoying lower back pain for past 3 days and yesterday decided to randomly take a pregnancy test. After years of negative after negative I was so shocked to see it turn positive almost right away. I haven't even been tracking my periods recently but think I'm only around 4 weeks.

My question is with my age and MC history, would anyone advise any extra supplements/medications I should be taking? Should I contact the GP?

I'm trying not to get my hopes up, especially after my last MC which resulted in failed medical management and then a disastrous D&C that also failed and I MC at home.

Any advice for a stressed older mum?
Thank you

You can ask your doctor for cyclogest pressaries and whether baby aspirin would be suitable for you. That's generally the pathway for multiple miscarriages if you qualify.

However, if a miscarriage is going to happen due to a defect in the embryo itself and not just a uterus issue, it will be no match. The pregnancy has to be healthy for it to have a chance of working.

I'm hoping for the best for you OP! Do you know how many weeks along you might be? I'd consider paying for a private scan around 6-7 weeks to find out if the baby has a heartbeat at this time and is in the correct place.

Congrats! I had a pg at 40 after 4 early mc in a row (i did have healthy kids born pre 35yrs) and no special recommends or extra monitoring was offered. I had a healthy pg and birth.

I'd even missed the folic acid stage- like you i had given up hope so i was close on 12 weeks when i found out i was pg (i suspected but thought it would end in mc like the others so i just would rather have never known and treated it like a heavy period)

One thing that kept me sane during the pg was the monitor where you can check your own baby's heart beat. It really worked well; i found the heart every time and, when baby wasn't moving, this really put my mind at rest.

Thanks ladies. I don't think I could be any more that 5 weeks, and like previous poster I'm also worried as I was only sporadically taking folic acid as I had totally given up hope.
Really hope this one sticks and is healthy.

I got a private early scan last time (around 18months ago) and that's where I found out baby had no heartbeat - was 9 weeks at this point. I will think about going for one again this time around.

I haven't even told DH yet as he is away on a business trip, he is home tomorrow so trying to think of a nice way to break the news. He is going to be so shocked too 😁

Congratulations OP,

I'm 41 and currently pregnant with our second (DD1 is 4). We also stopped trying or thinking about having another as I was getting perimenopause symptoms and had very irregular periods. I wasn't taking any folic acid or other pre pregnancy supplements, I was eating and drinking as normal etc. Just living normal life.

I'd check with a doctor before taking anything but I'm on pregnancy multivitamins, vitamin D, daily aspirin and magnesium. Plus iron since 12 weeks.

Good luck
