Ovarian torsion reassurance

After 2.5 years of trying for a second child (first is currently 3.5 and was conceived on the second month of trying), we decided to go down the IVF route. I have PCOS, a blocked fallopian tube and endometriosis (however a surgery to remove the tissue last year was successful and recent scans have shown it hasn't started to grow back yet).

Ovaries did overstimulate with IVF and we ended up doing egg collection slightly early. Very stressful but ended up with a positive pregnancy test. Last week, I went to A and E with horrific abdominal pains. Was in overnight, ruled out an ectopic pregnancy, pains had eased and I was sent home.

On Saturday, the pain came back with a vengeance. Absolutely worse than childcare, I couldn't walk from the car into the hospital. I was vomiting and wetting myself uncontrollably and screaming in agony. Given morphine, but limited due to the pregnancy. Unfortunately I was in A and E (vomiting continued, pain getting worse) for 24 hours before I was taken to Gynaecology. So much they couldn't do due to the pregnancy but ended up doing an ultrasound and identifying an ovarian torsion. I had emergency surgery within the next hour.

(Sorry this is so long!). From what I've read, ovarian torsion is rare. They have successfully untwisted the ovary but it's so large (likely from the fertility treatment) that there is a risk it could twist back. Does anyone have any success stories of having this kind of pain/operation in the first trimester?

I have another scan next week but I've all but given up hope. I've had morphine, dihydrocodeine, a general anaesthetic and surgery. I just can't see how the baby could survive this trauma.

Thank you so much for getting this far. X

I can't comment on having this during pregnancy, but just wanted to send my best wishes to you. I recently had emergency surgery for ovarian torsion and the pain beforehand was just phenomenal, so I really feel for you. I am mid fifties though and had the ovary removed, so can't actually answer your question, just wanted to send you luck and solidarity. Remember that babies are tremendously resilient. All the best.

Thank you so much - I don't know anyone who has had this before (and I had never heard of it before I had it) so I'm just reassured I wasn't being overly dramatic with the pain! Thank you

Ovarian torsion isn't rare. The risks of surgery to a pregnancy have to be balanced against the risks of not doing surgery - for this sort of emergency it is totally normally to do the operation.

Thank you - how did yours go? 1 in 17,000 seems fairly rare to me? I appreciate that risk increases in pregnancy. One of the consultants at the hospital had seen it before but the other never had.
