Stopping drinking while trying to conceive?

Hello! Just want to get a sense of what the norm is....did people stop drinking when trying to get pregnant? I will obviously stop when if I do, but do people stop when trying?

I did but only because I was doing fertility treatment and you get a bit desperate with that so do anything to make it go a bit better. I stopped drinking except for a couple of special occasions after Christmas and then completely while treatment was underway.

my personal belief if it probably makes no difference unless you drink vast amounts of alcohol and it otherwise ruins your health.

After years of infertility and failed IVF etc, the day I got pregnant naturally was also the day I had two bottles of champagne 😳😁

It's completely up to you and probably depends on your situation. If at the beginning of your Ttc journey without any reason to think you may have difficulty conceiving, probably no need to give up. If you do have any issues then a healthy lifestyle is the first thing any fertility specialist is going to suggest, and little to no alchohol is a part of that. Hopefully things happen easily for you!

I did for the first 6 months of TTC. Then allowed a bit pre ovulation for the next 6 months. 3 years later I just drink whatever I want and will stop if I ever get a positive test. (I'm not a heavy drinker anyway though)

I think it doesn't matter if you drink occasionally at that stage if you don't have fertility issues, but it if you have problems it can improve your chances if you and your partner stop drinking and have a healthy diet and lifestyle.

No but I cut right back, especially in the tww. I didn't drink while bf either and I've never gone back to drinking as much as I used to.

First time I didn't, and actually drank a lot the week I got pregnant, unfortunately I had a miscarriage which made me a bit paranoid (although I am sure there's no connection). When TTC again, I only had 1/2 drinks a week, and usually only before ovulation. It's just as important, if not more so, that your partner cuts back or stops.

I think often with these questions quantity is relevant.
You could have one person that only drinks one alcoholic drink once or twice a month saying oh yeah I continued to drink the same as usual. A second person might drink a bottle of wine twice a week say oh I massively reduced the amount I drank and the reduced is now one alcoholic drink once or twice a month. They now both drink the same but their messages about whether they changed habits are different.

I didn’t drink much anyway, but I’d say I cut back - had one glass of wine where I might previously have had two or three. Especially as time went on, as it took a couple of years to get pregnant with my first.

Floomobal · 16/09/2024 13:16

I’m not a heavy drinker. Sometimes will have a couple of drinks over a week, other times won’t drink at all. Currently TTC and I am drinking as normal, but generally only in the first 2 weeks of my cycle.

I tried to be a bit more mindful of what I was eating and drinking but didn’t stop enjoying myself as you don’t know how long it will take. As we were approaching the year mark with no luck I said fuck it, drank loads, stopped taking my prenatal vitamins and got pregnant.

TheTealBiscuit · 16/09/2024 21:39

Both me and DH cut back. We weren't massive drinkers anyway, but wanted to make sure we had the best chance possible, so i also thought more about what i was eating as well. We didn't want to stop drinking completely though. I tended to have non-alcoholic drinks at home and just have alcohol when i was out, but drink slower than i normally would.

StampOnTheGround · 16/09/2024 21:51

No not at all, it can take couples years to conceive - I continued my life as normal until I saw the positive pregnancy test and then didn't touch a drop after that.
