If you were induced, how long did it take?

I'm due to go in next week for an induction at 39 weeks.
I've been told it might not happen straight away so I've packed for a few days.
If you've had an induction how long did it take for labour to start?
I think they hope to start with ARM

6 hours each time, started with ARM and went quickly to the drip. Both really lovely experiences (google labour hopscotch, it helps!). Both babies almost 10lb, second was back to back, still really nice experiences. No pain relief as was not expecting it to go so quickly at the end!

Waters broke around 12 hours after induction, had emergency section 16 hours after waters broke

That sounds reassuring, I'm thinking of an epidural this time round though as I've heard it can be more painful or at least more powerful contractions.

9 hours, at 39+2. Pessary in at 3pm. Labour by 6pm. Had DD by midnight.

I was VERY active - apart from when being monitored, I was walking up and down or bouncing on the birthing ball constantly, which I think helped.

Hoppinggreen · 13/09/2024 13:11

3 days
I was being threatened with a C section if DS didn't make a move soon.
The 3 days were awful as I was on a ward so no sleep and I had DD at home missing me but once DS started it wasn't too bad as I moved to a room and I had an epidural

About 36 hours from the pessary to birth, the pessary didn't do much overnight so had the drip the next morning, and baby was born the following morning. They did slow the drip at a few points as they were worried about the baby's heart rate, so it might have been a bit quicker if that hadn't been happening

Will they do some sweeps before your induction date? Is there a reason they won’t let you go overdue?
My first induction was 41 plus 6 and although I had my waters broken I ended up needing the drip and it was all horrible- the classic “cascade of Interventions” with drip, epidural, forceps delivery. Started 8.30 baby born 4.30 the following morning.

My second was at 41 plus 5 and waters were broken at 8am but then things started moving themselves and dd was born at 3pm without further need for interventions (well she got stuck so there were actually a few interventions needed 😬)

But none of my four pregnancies have gone before EDD … so unsure how an induction at 39 would have worked…probs not that well as my body seems to want to overcook babies!

Partly because I'm over 40 and also because I have had a baby with strep b (gbs) so they want to give me antibiotics 4 hours before I'm induced.

First time at 40+3, it took less than 24 hours from pessary to birth. I reacted a bit too well to the induction that time and went from 1cm-10cm in a couple of hours.

Second time at 39+2, it took several days but part of that was low staff levels which held things up e.g. I had to wait 24 hours for someone to be available to break my waters. That time my body wasn't really ready and I had several pessaries etc before my cervix softened enough to allow access to waters. Once waters were broken it only took about 8 hours until birth though. If they are able to start with this then hopefully yours won't take so long.

Best of luck, hope it all goes smoothly!

Induction to birth took me 6 hours. I was put on a drip and the contractions started soon after. Earlier on in the day I'd had a sweep and manually broken waters. These didn't do anything but the drip did. Good luck!

NoEscapingMe · 13/09/2024 14:50

I've had 2 inductions. 41 weeks took 8 days. 38 weeks took about 4 days. Was years ago so maybe they procedure and drugs used are very different now

CuloGrande · 13/09/2024 14:53

Had the pessary 8am Saturday, nothing happened, drip 4pm Saturday and baby born 9am Sunday. Had been waiting from Friday morning as my waters broke but labour didn’t start.

Pilotingmyownlife · 13/09/2024 14:53

I had a spontaneous birth at 40 weeks which was much slower (and traumatic) than my 6 hour induction at 37 weeks with twins.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 13/09/2024 15:00

11 hours from pessary to holding baby.

skippy67 · 13/09/2024 15:12

Exactly 2 hours from my waters being broken manually, to baby being out. Contractions started immediately after my waters broke. I was 42 weeks and had only gone in for them to check baby's heartbeat😅

Chasingbaby2 · 14/09/2024 11:16

I had ARM at 40+5 and baby was born 7 hours later.
They wanted to do an epidural and drip 4 hours after ARM but I said no. Baby was born not long after so it turned out to be a good call as I wanted as little intervention as possible.
