Decaf tea apparently bad?!

I'm nine weeks pregnant and had switched to decaf tea thinking I was doing the right thing. I've been drinking about three cups of Yorkshire decaf a day, but have just discovered it uses the methylene chloride process which is apparently bad and now I'm freaking out?!

Best advice I ever got as a mum to be was to step away from Google. Seriously.

Honestly don't Google, as PP said. You'll think everything ever is bad. I mostly have Rooibos tea as it's naturally decaf, and I prefer the taste. I still have 1/2 cups of regular tea a day anyway, have throughout pregnancy.

Don't overthink it. The NHS recommends decaf tea and coffee as safe while pregnant. I drank 4 cups a day of it during my pregnancy and all through breastfeeding (2 years and counting) and she's absolutely fine... I drink clipper decaf which uses natural processes to decaffeinate, maybe just switch brand?

I'd be more concerned about eating heavily processed food tbh.

I drank proper tea throughout both my pregnancies - 3-4 cups a day. No issues at all.

Mymblesdaughter · 11/09/2024 10:59

Clipper Decaf is naturally decaffeinated.

Thanks all, will try to stay away from Google ('try' being the operative word) and have just purchased some Clipper tea :)

not really anything to be worried about.

You can drink normal tea and coffee, 2-4
cups a day are no issue, just keep an eye on caffeine content as your iced latte may have 3 shots of espresso which would nearly max out your allowance for day. The most recent studies back this up. No study says ‘pregnant women can’t drink caffeine at all’.

the strict guidance and warnings of avoiding caffeine is lowest common denominator advice aimed to stop people chugging 3 cans of monster energy drink a day

If you are going to scare yourself with stuff on the internet, you may as well actually read some proper studies. You may only need to ‘swap’ to decaff for your third or fourth cup depending on caffeine content.

It is fine to drink during my first pregnancy I had it everyday from when I found out I was pregnant at 2 weeks, it did not effect me nor my child. Im pregnant now 2nd trimester and still having it. I am having tetley decaf
