Low lying (not previa) placenta - 28 weeks - implications

Had my 28 week consultant apt & scan earlier this week and they mentioned that the placenta was low. This is the first time it has ever been mentioned, so I’m assuming it was either normal on previous scans (have had lots of scans) or missed, or this particular consultant’s view differs to others.

I’m aware it might mean I need to have a c section when the time comes if it hasn’t moved up.

My next appointment and scan is not until 32 weeks. So I’m wondering in the meantime if there things I need to do like - for example - no sex / orgasms (as they cause uterine contractions), is flying ok (have a very short haul in a couple of weeks), should I rest more etc.?

Anyone had this and have any tips? Thanks!

I had a low lying placenta at my 20 week scan, which fortunately moved up by the time I was scanned again at 34 weeks - I was told I didn't need to do anything differently because it was only low lying rather than covering the cervix. If you haven't been given any specific advice then there's no reason not to just carry on with normal activities. Fingers crossed for you that it moves before your next scan!

@CluelessInLondon thanks so much - that’s really reassuring! No specific advice - just worried after a Google search (typical 😂).

Many years ago I had this , had regular scans but by 36 weeks was determined it wasn’t an issue and I had a vaginal delivery at 41 weeks

Same here I am now 34 weeks it's moved up they told me just do everything the same x

It really depends where it is. If there was anything you shouldn’t do then they’d have told you.
I had complete praevia (they described it as a Bundt cake, literally perfectly around the place it shouldn’t be!) and I was told no sex, no orgasms at all and advised I could fly but at my own risk and they’d rather I didn’t. I did get a drs note from my GP to show the airline but in the end I wasn’t really comfortable with how the dr treated me (wasn’t sure he fully understood the situation as it was a quick phone call appointment and he literally said yes straight away!) so I decided to stay back from a family holiday as didn’t want to risk complications in the air or having a baby in another country (I was around 32 weeks at that point).
If you still have questions I’d try to call and see if you can speak with your consultant.

Thanks, all! Really appreciate the replies. Hopefully it will move up (or rather uterus expansion will mean it’s higher up) before DD…

Mine is low lying too. Was told at 20 weeks and since then it’s moved from 8mm away to 9mm away at my 29 week scan last week 🙃 apparently it needs to be 3ish cm to be classed as ok.
Midwife wasn’t concerned and said it could still move and has ‘plenty of time’ whereas I’m like no it’s not 🤣 I don’t want a c-section, I have a 2.5 year old and have the impression recovery will be absolute hell 😭

Yellowindigo · 09/09/2024 23:56

@Mumof12022 oh really hope it moves enough for you over the next few weeks! I read that most do - though not sure if that is before 28 weeks… fingers crossed for us both!!

Mine didn't move. I rested and avoided sex and still had a massive bleed at 34 weeks and an emergency C-section.

CluelessInLondon · 10/09/2024 09:29

@Mumof12022 If it helps, I was told that a lot of the movement happens after 28 weeks as the third trimester is when the uterus is really stretching - think it's most likely to move if you have an anterior placenta.

Mumof12022 · 10/09/2024 17:31

@CluelessInLondon keeping my fingers crossed but I don’t have much hope. Mine is posterior so even less chance 😬
