Moses Basket & other alternatives?

Hi!

First timer here and feeling pretty clueless about a lot of ‘what to buy’ for baby due this winter.

Had assumed we’d get a Moses basket for in the living room but have heard a lot of mixed reviews about how much they get used! So my question is… what are the alternatives? Where else could/ would baby sleep during the day?

Thanks!

In the pram, if you can wheel it in, or in the bassinet bit of the pram if it comes off. The latter is essentially a Moses basket.

Changethetoner · 07/09/2024 19:50

Yes, get a pram with a good mattress, where baby can lie back flat and sleep. The wheels mean you can rock them in the house!

Blue2020 · 07/09/2024 19:50

We used the carrycot on the pram in the livingroom. Although he also slept on us a lot too in the livingroom, he cried if we laid him down. Then a few weeks in we used a sling too for short walks where he would sleep.

Honestly there is no right or wrong.

We used a Moses basket until the children grew out of it. But we used it both at night and during the day. Didn't buy a next to me or anything. Then they went into a cot and I shared their room until they were old enough to be left.

My SIL swears by a Sleepyhead/Dockatot for daytime. Others use their pram. One person I know only uses the bassinet of the Uppababy Vista V2 (which is suitable for overnight sleep) and no separate Moses basket or next to me.

Had a bugaboo, it was great pram cot pushchair combo , lasted for years, and passed it on still being used , you can get them second hand
good luck op hope it goes well
don’t buy to much stuff
baby years go in a flash, I spent far to much as a first time mum
clothes last a minute to

First DC had next to me in the bedroom and used carrycot from the pram in the day time.

Didn't really like the next to me so for 2nd DC got a Mokee woolnest which is a Moses basket but a bit bigger. Used that downstairs and upstairs until they went into their cot (but they were a relatively small baby!)

Rory17384949 · 07/09/2024 20:09

We used ours quite a lot. But you could also use a pram for downstairs naps

BertieBotts · 07/09/2024 20:13

First baby slept on me/in a baby bouncer (similar type to baby bjorn) - the bouncers are not recommended for sleep these days, though.

Second, pram carrycot then upgraded him to a playpen that you could raise the base like a cot. That then transitioned into his play area.

Third same as second, supplemented with a baby swing.

For DS2 and 3 we lived in a flat so I did swap to naps in the cot after about 4 months.

Happiestwhen · 07/09/2024 20:19

We had a moses basket for downstairs and a next-to-me with a snoozepod in upstairs. I normally left the pram in the car as we need to drive everywhere. It would have been a pain bringing it in and out all the time. We got use out of the moses basket for the first 3/4 months and then just had baby in the bedroom with the monitor after that for all naps. You can get them cheap on Marketplace, if you do just buy a new mattress to follow guidelines and keep baby safe.

It's pretty much impossible to know until DC is here!
My first born wouldn't entertain the moses basket or the 'next to me' crib but slept well in the carrycot of her pram.
She ended up in her full size 'big cot' from 7 weeks (in our room of course).

BuenosAiresTango · 07/09/2024 22:02

We used a Moses basket downstairs for around 5 months until DD grew too big for it (but she was very small to begin with) and a snuzpod upstairs. And when she outgrew the Moses basket we just used the travel cot downstairs and snuzpod upstairs. I wanted her to realise snuzpod+room upstairs means night sleep and Moses basket or travel cot downstairs with background noise/telly means daytime sleep!

HolyCannoli · 07/09/2024 22:05

I had a mokee for the living room and next to me crib upstairs. And traditional cot in nursery as well. Then DS decided bollock to that all, and he wouldn't let us put him down for any longer than about 20 minutes at a time from day dot, so consistently contact napped until he was 1, and we bed shared until he was 3. Sold mokee, next to me and cot practically unused after a couple of years. Used the baby carrier a lot though and pram, but that had to be in motion outside for him to sleep. So there's really no way of knowing OP.

CheeseWisely · 07/09/2024 22:09

We have a Moses basket and used it absolutely loads in the first couple of months. He's 3 months now and I think we'll be selling or donating it soon as it won't be long until he's touching each end!

We're in a flat so no space to bring the pram in but I can't imagine wanting the street dirty wheels (especially in winter) in the lounge anyway. Our pram carrycot was more cumbersome than the Moses basket and a lot heavier to carry around.

PreggersWithBaby2 · 08/09/2024 07:55

With Baby 1, we used a moses basket in the beginning for day time naps and had a next to me for night time. Baby was very small so we swapped around and used the moses basket at night and her pram for day time naps until she got a bit bigger

mitogoshi · 08/09/2024 07:58

I had a flat, used the bassinet on the pram until 6 months day and night, so easy as just pushed around. Mine were small and grew slowly though, you can use a full size cot for night even from birth anyway. You don't need all these things, it's personal choice.

Uncooperativefingers · 08/09/2024 08:05

We've got the pram bassinet and she sleeps in that for most day and all night time sleeps. It's the Inglesina Aptica, so rated for overnight (and is a larger bassinet than many) and the travel system comes with a fixed stand so we put the bassinet on that.

The stand mostly stays upstairs by the bed (unless we have visitors), so the bassinet is usually on the floor when she's napping downstairs. We also have a paddle pod that she goes through phases of liking napping in and not.

We're in a small house and it's for 6 months (less for a moses basket as they often grow out of them), so I really didn't want loads of stuff.

Carrycot in hallway

Floor on a foam playmat like Totter and tumble with a fabric playmat on top - mine used to pass out after looking at the toys above. I put them in a swaddle wrap or sleep bag. This is before they roll over.

Movable bedside crib like Snuzpod

Travel cot, it’s worth buying a collapsible travel cot as use loads if visiting family or going away I’ve got the Bugaboo Stardust Travel cot and you can move it room to room. The base moves from newborn cot level to toddler cot level so 3 years of use. Can also use it as a pen at the lower level once they do move and you want to nip to loo.

The bugaboo stardust is fab and very lightweight to move around.

We bought a separate 'house pram' (never goes outside so wheels stay clean), and so glad we didn't bother with a Moses basket. I can wheel baby around downstairs, it's great for taking her to the kitchen and being able to carry things back at the same time! I always hated the 'frilly' look of a Moses basket.
