Can stress harm baby?

I feel a bit ridiculous for writing this thread but at the same time have been nervous and anxious about it since last night.

I had a horrible argument with my partner last night, the worst we have ever had and it was very very very stressful and intense, screaming etc.

Have I harmed baby in any way? I am 14 weeks for reference. Just feel sick with worry.

Hi OP, sorry you've had a big row with your partner. It's not ideal but while stress in general can have a negative affect, a one off argument shouldn't do any harm to your baby. Just take it easy today, indulge in a bit of quiet and self care, maybe a gentle walk in the fresh air. Just calm, calm, calm. Give each other some space.

It's never a nice situation to be in but it's a lot more common than people think. Pregnancy is actually a very stressful time for both partners with worries about how life is going to change, money worries, arguments over silly things as hormones are raging etc....I think some men struggle with feeling a bit like a spare part too. The worry is if the arguments become constant or if it escalates further to an abusive situation.

I'm not implying this is relevant to you, just posting for anyone else reading, but there is a proven increase in domestic violence during pregnancy. In many cases, pregnancy is the trigger that starts it for the first time when there hasn't previously been any violence. This of course can put the woman and her baby at risk and it's important to seek some help and support if anyone is experiencing this. Midwives should be well trained to offer support and advice.

No you haven't harmed the baby, especially this early on. But managing stress during pregnancy is important, and stress does impact the baby later on. If it's a one off, it's fine and please don't worry.
