Hello! Next week I’ll be 17 weeks with TWINS
I have an obstetrics appointment and midwife different days. What do I expect in both appointments? Won’t they do similar checks? Or any different?

Congratulations! I had a similar clash in one week and the admin team cancelled my midwife appointment. When I saw the midwife the week after, she was not happy at all as the checks carried out by the midwife differ to the checks carried out for the obstetrics appointment.

I’m not sure what happens when your appointment is for twins but two differences I can think of is the midwife listened to heartbeat, measured bump and checked urine, whereas for my obstetrics appointment, the midwife only did blood pressure (and probably more but not that much). So they are different appointments.

Hi Op. congrats!
Im 32 weeks with twins, from my appointments I had a 16 week midwife appointment, 20 week consultant and then all my appointments have been with consultants only since.
I haven’t had my bump measured because they advised it’s inaccurate for twins (might be different elsewhere) but have had bloods etc etc at the relevant stages.
not sure on the type of twins you have but the twins trust website is a great resource for checking when you should have appointments and what ideally should be covered so you can go prepared.

I actually missed lots of midwife appointments when I was pregnant with twins. I had fortnightly scans from 12 weeks and there was not an appointment at the obstetrics clinic so they’d tag me on to the ultrasound list and consultant would come and have a chat. This was fab as I’d be in and out rather than doing this 2 hour plod around the clinic. Like a conveyor you waited for each check at different places.

I think I was 24 weeks when I got a normal appointment and the clinic midwife was like wtf as no one had been testing my bp or urine or measuring bump. Then we agreed I’d go to community midwife at Gp for checks on the off weeks. She promptly sent me up for monitoring as couldn’t tell one baby heartbeat from the other With the Doppler. The hospital was a bit wtf and suggested I decline midwife Doppler checks. Unless there were two midwives with two Doppler it’s always hard to distinguish twin heartbeats.

My twins were MCDA so they shared a placenta but each had their own sac. Appointment wise you will get less for DCDA twins and more for MCMA. I did find that communication was a bit blurred and some of the midwife advice contradicted the consultants advice. Which wasn’t really helpful but all was well in the end.
