Worried about this weight gain!

So I had a midwife appointment yesterday and asked to be weighed (I hadn't been since my first scan and was curious as I felt I'd definitely gained some weight)

At my first initial midwife appointment back In May I weighed 58.8kg, 9st 3lbs. In June, first scan I was weighed again and weighed 61.7kg, 9st 10lb so quiet an increase in 4 weeks of 6LBS, got weighed again yesterday, so about 11 weeks later and in a whopping 70.6kg, 11st 1lb and I'm 26 weeks on Monday!!

This is my first pregnancy so I've no idea what the norm is - but this seems like a massive jump to me and I've still got 14 weeks to go.
I have a very active job - I'm on my feet all day, usually smashing 10,000 steps daily, I haven't been as active on the weekends because honestly, I'm exhausted come to end of the week.

I've been eating larger portions but still don't eat breakfast and often skip lunch (if don't have time) so bigger evening meals and I do snack of an evening... but a whopping 24lbs since May!!

I hate to sound vein - but I'm usually a petite size 8. I'm 5ft 4 so not particularly tall. My boobs have only gone up one cup size in bra although do feel fuller.
My BMI back in May was 22, now 26.
Is this considered a big weight gain so early on??

you should by no means be ‘dieting’ but a healthy diet is needed with regular meals. Don’t skip meals!

I've never been a breakfast eater - can't stomach breakfast. Lunch I do eat unless there is the odd day I don't have time which is occasional.

I did read the nhs guidance and still consider myself on the higher side of that considering I've almost gained the recommended by 26 weeks... 😬

It’s really tricky to know what is water and what is real ‘weight’ in pregnancy. With one of mine I literally gained about 4st and I was panicking all the time, weighing myself. It just went up and up despite sticking to recommended calories. Baby was on the small side as well. It did turn out to be mostly water in my extremities and it mostly dropped away within the first two weeks. I was only up about about ten pounds in the end. Although that was a bugger to shift

Stop skipping meals and remember not all the weight increase is just you 'gaining weight'... remember the baby will be weighing more and more and the placenta, the amniotic fluid etc will be contributing to the extra pounds. It won't all just be weight gain.

Also you probably are eating more in one sitting during your 'bigger' evening meals and snacks than you probably would if you ate 3 meals spread out during the day.

I am pretty much the same height/weight as you and after having my baby out with everything that comes with it, and after I settled into motherhood, I had about 10kg to loose. It's totally doable. Just don't let yourself gain more weight after the baby is here!

I didn't realise that you put weight on all over. I was struggling to get some things over my thighs when I was pregnant. I started off the same weight and height as you.

Here's some pictures of Margot Robbie. One is her with a prosthetic pregnancy for a film where she looks slim but with a bump. The other is her actually pregnant and you can see her whole body has got bigger. It's not just a cute little bump as you see in films.

A normal weight gain in pregnancy is 8-12 kilos, less if you are overweight. From my experience the 8 kilos is dropped immediately at and after birth - the baby plus all its gear and extra blood weight about that much.

I put on loads of weight when pregnant with my first, despite still attending circuit training and swimming 3 days a week. After the birth and the ‘sweats’ you get post birth (that no one warned me about btw!) I lost all of it within about 2 weeks! It was mainly water, despite it looking like excess weight everywhere (back, shoulders, legs, bum, hips).

I put on 4 stone in my first pregnancy! I lost it all in about 6-9 months after birth. In my second I “only” put on 2 stone. So it can vary from pregnancy to pregnancy.
I stopped weighing myself in my third and current (fourth) pregnancy as I know it’ll just upset me seeing it pile on, and I know I can put the work in to loosing it afterwards.
So my advice would be to carry on eating healthy and just don’t get on the scales again while pregnant. If a midwife asks to weigh me I tell them I don’t want to know and I just don’t look at results!

Hi op
when I got pregnant I was a semi pro athlete..weighed 9st in the gym everyday working with a nutrition coach. I put on nearly 4 stone during pregnancy and looked and felt awful. I didn’t continue to train as I was so tired and I invisibly stopped tracking my food..I didn’t eat terrible but definitely ate things I wouldn’t have before..eg I went from protein oats for breakfast to 2 croissants 😂 I’m now 7 months postpartum and back to my pre pregnancy weight, a bit more jiggle on the tummy and massive boobs due to breastfeeding but no massive differences in my body. If you’re used to exercising and eating well you will get it back, don’t worry enjoy your pregnancy!

I was very worried about my weight gain too but there wasn't much I could do about it in the end. I gained 25kgs. I was a healthy weight and fit to begin with so obgyn was not worried, even though recommended gain is 10-15 kgs. Every woman is different and a lot of it is water weight too. The smaller you are to begin with, the more you gain apparently.

also, my weight gain slowed down massively in my third trimester, which obgyn said is normal too. You get bigger, use more calories, but, at least in my case, couldn't stomach big meals anymore.

I lost 12 kgs in my first 10 days (while eating pizza and croissants to get me through the agony of c section recovery and learning to breastfeed). The other 13 kgs will have to come off slowly.

Thank you, that's really reassuring. Such a strange transition being pregnant, especially your first. Seeing your body change both physically and on the scales, outgrowing clothes and just weight gain that usually wouldn't be there but suddenly the calories cling to you.
I'm also having a csection and plan to breastfeed. So hopefully similar will happen. I intend to be pretty active while on maternity leave too, I've brought myself a baby carrier for lots of long walks, it'll be winter and I love nothing more than wrapping up warm, buying a hot drink and just wandering for hours and coming home to a cosy home. So hopefully that'll encourage some weight lost pp too! 🤞🏼 just going to have to try and embrace it - also hopeful it'll slow down in the 3rd trimester too!

I lost about 10kg immediately after birth…

there are loads of things other than baby (the placenta, water retention, you also have extra blood which is lost. - I lost a litre that’s about a kilo?)

eat health and work it out once the baby is born. I gained about 15kgs in both pregnancies which i thought was okay?

Rory17384949 · 08/09/2024 14:10

1-2 stone is recommended, but if you're on the smaller side that can be more .
I put on more like 2 stone with my first but I was slim when I got pregnant, with my second it was only a stone but I was already a stone heavier getting pregnant than I was first time around.
You should eat to your appetite, eat healthily and definitely don't skip meals or "diet".
Your body is going to change which can be hard at times, but you can worry about getting back to a healthy weight after the baby is born.

PaillettenBedeckt · 08/09/2024 14:46

You never know what will happen. I felt very heavy during pregnancy but actually all the weight I put on was very much needed. I ended up underweight from breastfeeding. It takes up so many calories I couldn't keep up.
