Irish baby names

RubyQueen23 · 02/09/2024 12:28

Due in around 9 weeks so beginning to try shortlist some names (I never name the baby until they are born & I see them but like to have a wee list ready!)

Our other kids have Irish names so want to keep in with that… would like a name that sounds the way you spell it… I do love traditional Irish names however as we don’t live in Ireland, don’t want a lifetime of having to spell out/pronounce name!

All boy & girl suggestions welcome 🩵🩷 thank you!

I’m Irish - Conor & Maeve are my firm favourites!

5month · 02/09/2024 12:46

Orla, Maeve, Cillian, Sean, Fionn

harrietm87 · 02/09/2024 13:34

What are your kids’ names?

I think boy names are easier from this perspective - Ronan, Lorcan, Enda, Cormac, Declan - shouldn’t present any spelling or pronunciation issues, and Sean and Conor are familiar to English people too, or Dermot though it’s an anglicised spelling.

For girls then Nora, Cara, Orla, Una and Niamh and Aoife are becoming quite well known now despite the spelling.

I already have an Orla! I actually like the name Cora, not technically Irish but feel it sounds it and almost a mixture of Nora & Cara - good choices 🙂

How is Lorcan pronounced? Quite like Ronan, and also Conan. Xx

Already have an Aidan & have used Cillian as a middle name too 🤣 good taste! My husband loves Erin and I love Saoirse but it’s just the spelling&pronounciation that I’d be hesitant to use, if a girl comes out!! Thank you for suggestions xx

Lorcan is phonetically pronounced (lor-kin). We’re in NI, it’s the most popular Irish name in DD’s school by a mile

Rory17384949 · 02/09/2024 19:38

I love Aoife and I think most people know how to say it.
Also:
Maeve
Cara
Nora
Bridget

For a boy:
Connor
Cian
Darragh
Finn
Rory

Really?! We’re in Scotland, and honestly never heard of it… (I work with kids too!) but I like something a bit different, yet still easy to enough for us to pronounce 🍀
