Hi everyone,

Had my GTT yesterday and had the call today to say I’ve developed GD. After 2 hours my blood sugar was 7.8 and the cut off is 7.8 (gutted). I am really worried and so upset by it, I know it’s not ‘my’ fault but it feel like a mind field. My last pregnancy was smooth sailing, lovely water birth and quick delivery and I feel like this one is so much more complicated and i won’t get any of that. My BMI is just over 30 so already been told no for a water birth due to BMI probably going over 35 by the time of delivery. I just feel defeated.

I have a group session (which I am dreading!), meeting with a dietician, growth scan and consultation appointment on Monday.

I’ve joined the gestational diabetes uk Facebook group so hoping that will help, but hoping for some positive stories 😞

try not to worry my daughter was a healthy size yes the checking blood sugar a pain but my pregnancy went smoothly .I recommend levemir ,metformin gave me a upset stomach. They did tell me i had to have a induction but it was very A to B simple straightforward.

For the most part as long as you keep a eye on what you eat your blood sugar should not go to high if you not had a problem before

I had it with 4 kids and yeah it’s a layer of admin no one needs or wants but it’s ok.

top tips: watch your carb intake. Think south beach diet or low GI. Carbs convert to sugar. Sometimes if you pair with protein it helps to bring it down- didn’t for me.

the thing that worked for me was exercise. Walking lots after meals, and lifting weights. Lifting weights was the only thing that kept me in ‘normal’ with my fourth despite being on metformin. Lifting in the morning depleted my muscles and the burn kept going over night to keep my morning bloods in check.

think full fat, low carb - nuts, seeds, yog, salad, veggies, berries and meat. It can be a very healthy approach to eating. But granted it’s not what you need when your pregnant- but don’t worry, it’s manageable you just need to get informed about food x
