I used to snack on veggie sticks and hummous a fair amount - helped with getting requisite fruit and veg count

For a good veggie meal, just roast a load of veg (peppers, red onions, garlic, courgettes, aubergene), add a tin of tomatoes, and serve with wholewheat pasta twists. You can blend the veggies if you prefer a smooth sauce.

Oh and get yourself some dried apricots or other dried fruit to snack on. Great for staving off the all too common constipation too.

i love smoothies in the morning. Freeze some sliced ripe bananas and whizz them with frozen berries, yoghurt, honey, milk or soy milk.
I put in fresh ginger, flax seeds, cinammon, sometimes even jam.

The basis is the yoghurt, milk and banana . .

i second hummus and veggies - cut a bunch up and then store them in water in the fridge. you can eat loads of eggs without worrying about cholestrol when you're pregnant - so omelettes are good too.

jacket potatoes with tuna and cheese are my backup meals.

Cereal with fruit chopped in it is quick, cheap and packed with healthy stuff. I like special K with freashs trawberries or rasperries. Good if you've got a sweet tooth like me

Plenty of crisps, good strong flavours like pickled onion monster munch and salt and vinegar discos.

And really super sweet high sugar choc bars like cadbury's caramel.

After all, you need to keep your strength up.

Ooo for me its braeburn apples. Now I am on maternity leave I have been going to the fruit shop every day and getting a bag of five enormous ones each time. Have thoroughly enjoyed scoffing every one . For meals, I am having romaine lettuce with everything. I had never bought it before being pregnant, but now Imake big ceaser salads with cucumber, onions, peppers, chicken and anything else I can get my hands on, as well as in big sandwiches with ham and on the side of pretty much every meal. I had pineapple last night too which was scrummy. This post makes me sound a bit too saintly. I should add that this is all washed down with a healthy dose of chocolate and Nigellas rocky road cakes (which are not as bad as shop bought, because I made them)

caramel - you forgot Frazzles.

I've been addicted to sharp apples (Braeburn, Granny Smiths etc) and raw carrots this pregnancy. I eat a shocking amount of them everyday.

Lumps of cheese are also good.

Can you make soup? Homemade soup from lots of different veg (with a good strong chicken stock) is great for healthy stuff plus you can keep a large jug/tupperware box of it in the fridge for a few days. And eat it with various lovely breads everyday. Mmmmm.

Likewise, make a big bowl of salad in the morning and use it for snacking/lunch & dinner.

Sardines on toast. Scrambled egg on toast.

bacause Ive got GD we've had to be ultra healthy so basic run-down of what we're eating

Ive been on the porridge with dried fruit in it for breakfast

Lunchs - cook up some pasta/ rice/ couscous etc chop up a shedload of salad (whatever you like), bit of cooked meat, handful of grated cheese, some nuts/seeds. you can add a bit of pesto/ sundried tomatos/ salad dressing if you like, best thing to do is make it so that the majority of the meal id fruit and veg. a sandwich is also ok, make if yourself (as shop-bought contains much hidden sugar) but make it with wholemal bread and load up on salad in it too... I've been getting bergen bread but DP has discovered it and now i have to fight him for it!!!

main meal - just be sensible - balanced diet. Fish is pretty good here, basically with your meat stick to lean stuff.

pretty much the dietician recomended no sugar, low carbs. Effectively the low GI diet (but without the chocolate bars...) Ive been snacking on the nairns oakcake biscuits (the cheese ones).

I would recomend having dried fruit/nuts/raw veg with you at work as well because it stops you going to the chocolate machine...

I know this all sound saintly - but i'm only doing it because of the dire "you could hurt your baby" warnings... i would LOVE some chocolate. Or proper biscuits not sodding oat healthy bran type stuff, or fish and chips....

Fruit salad with Greek yoghurt is awesome (I've had to start adding chopped prunes to mine, poxy constipation ).

If you're a bit bored of sarnies for lunch, those soft tortilla wraps can be good. Spread hummous on them then roll up around loads of salad, or spread wasabi paste on them and roll up around tuna and cucumber. Or you can make bean wraps: mix up a tin of (rinsed) black eye beans with some peppers, cucumber, spring onion, carrot, tomato and whatever else you fancy (all chopped very small), lots of herbs, a good splash of olive oil and red wine vinegar, some seeds and a handful of grated cheddar. Then use this to fill the wraps. Very healthy and delicious.

Then eat 10 pickled onions and a Caramel

I don't eat meat and haven't done since I was very young. I do eat lots of fish though and lots of different veg and pulses like lentils/chickpeas etc - and I also love eggs and cheese. I take Pregnacare to keep my iron levels up during pregnancy.

Hiya thanks for the advice,

Am eating lots of dried and fresh fruit and salad.

Been eating brown rice insead of white.

Added lots of veg to my homemade curry last night too.

Does anyone know if its OK to eat spinach, cauliflower and broccoli raw? Keep dipping it in the houmas in the fridge! lol

oh yes - raw is fine! Better than cooked as long as you wash it.

Pour a kettle of boiling water over the contents of a bag of spinach. Put in food processor with some (toasted) pine nuts, olive oil, garlic if you can stand it and 3/4 packet of feta type cheese (yes that is safe!). Whizz into a pesto type sauce with some salt pepper nutmeg. Cook pasta in the meantime and mix, eat with some olives. Very quick and healthy.

thanks madmouse - i made a version of that tonight with frozen spinach but with toasted walnuts and sesame seeds, creme fraiche and olive tapanade. it was sooooo goooood!
