Pain in my girly bits.....

Morning,

Excuse the rubbish title of this thread, but about 2 weeks ago I started to get a pain inside my pelvic bone area. I have no idea how to describe it, but I think it might be a muscle - do we even have muscles down there? It's nothing to do with weeing or any functions, but is very uncomfortable when I try to walk quickly or roll over in the night (maybe I'm using my legs to lever my self from 1 side to the other).
I'm 23 weeks (tomorrow) and I'm hoping you're all laughing at the really obvious solution to this as it's driving me nuts!

All advice gratefully received!

Hmm - this could be SPD - symphysis pubic dysfunction. You need to see your midwife quickly to get some advice on not letting it get worse. Bascially you will have to try to do everything with legs together and not strain the area with legs apart (nothing to do with DP/DH!)

Thanks for responding - a girl at work had just told me it was the baby's head on a nerve, which didn't seem right.I'll give my midwife a call now (although she normally takes a while to get back to me).

I had this - really does sound like SPD. I had to do things like go upstairs sideways, put a carrier bag on my car seat so I could swivel in with my knees together etc.

Does it pose a risk to the baby or is it just painful for me? Did they provide any useful solutions (exercise, miracle etc)?
Will I be able to carry on working (commute in on the tube)? Sorry - sounds dramatic but met a friend at the weekend who had to stop workign 10 weeks before her dd as she couldn't walk any more!

Hi P1
I have recently been diagnosed with SPD having experienced similar symptoms - I had never heard of it before

You can have physio via your MW - mine is making me an appointment - it can get quite bad if you overdo it so I have been told and as baby grows so take it easy.

A few tips in the meantime from me:

When the pain comes on don't try to push through it - rest up for a while until it eases - I find if I don't do this it becomes much worse and unbearable.

Try to avoid stairs and slopes (if walking outdoors). Walking on the flat isn't too bad for me when not in pain. As for stairs I live in a 3 storey house so have learnt to come down the stairs on my bottom and climb upstairs on hands and knees slowly keeping knees together as much as possible - not as challenging as it sounds

In bed, always bring your legs together when swivelling around to get out of bed and take your time. I am getting quite good at doing this half asleep for those through the night loo trips!

Getting in and out of the car can be a problem when the pain flares up - the carrier bag on your seat is a good suggestion as this helps you to swivel without using all your muscles.

Apparently a pregancy belt can help although I haven't tried this yet.

I found a useful assocation website somewhere a few weeks back I'll try and dig it out for you......

Good luck! It can be very frustrating if you are a fairly active person like me but listen to your body and you should be fine x

Thank you all for your advice. I've just come back from the hospital (midwife told me to pop in and see the doctor). They were brilliant and confirmed that it is SPD, it's a bit early, but probably unsurprising as I'm hypermobile/extensive and have gammy joints anyway. She's referring me to a physio who will give me a belt etc.
In the meantime, I will def follow all the tips. i thought it was muscle so was just pushing through it! Doh.
In the future I will learn to post it here straight away as you guys are so helpful.
Thanks

No risk to the baby but can get terribly painful for you with severe cases ending up with mum in a wheelchair until after the birth. Just be careful and keep to the advice.xx
