You should read Emily Oster Expecting Better. Chapter on what foods you can/can’t eat is very helpful and will make you feel much better.

Any cheese/cured meats are totally fine if they’ve been cooked (I ate so much baked Camembert when pregnant with my daughter). Even not cooked the risk of you 1) getting ill and 2) even if you get ill something happening to your baby, is very low. Higher risk in first trimester but you’re past that now. All the best x

Yes. Emily talks much more sense than the misogynistic NHS doling out over simplified advice for the little wimmin

You'll be fine OP, you have stomach acid to kill any nasties and an immune system.

Melted is the way I've been getting my fix of "banned" cheeses during pregnancy (my motto is "if in doubt, put it on a pizza"). You and baby will be fine.

Me too I was having a lot of margherita pizza with added Gorgonzola at the beginning of my pregnancy. Now too much heartburn! Congrats on your pregnancy @Newmumtobe2025 . In this pregnancy I’ve had to clean cat litter a few times where I couldn’t bear to wait until DH got home and felt the same. A medic really broke it down for me how many things need to happen and align for it to actually harm the baby.

A massive thanks to everyone who took the time to comment here; just felt better having others experiences being shared with me. I’ve woke up feeling ok and my mind more settled.
The worries and anxiousness has come from no where for me being pregnant, just one of them new feelings with it being my first time. Learning as I go and it’s real people that help you learn to try and relax. Thanks again ❤️

Pregnancy is such an anxious time isn't it, and the 'rules' are constantly changing!
I try to remind myself that women aims the world give birth to healthy babies every day.

FWIW, I absolutely love blue cheese so, when nausea allows, I've had it in toasties and on pizzas- current guidelines say cheeses and cured meats should be avoided UNLESS cooked to piping hot.

You enjoy it

Newmumtobe2025 · 30/08/2024 08:33

@sel2223 I mean it was melted on a pork chop under the grill. So I assume this would be hot enough to kill any bacteria.
I am so happy to be pregnant and what is meant to be a lovely time is kind of impacted by so many people advising things you shouldn’t be doing.
after ready listeria can be a thing after days - weeks and potentially cause serious harm - miscarriage, premature birth and infection to your new born! - there is no wonder i panicked and to be honest still have it in the back of my mind now just hoping all will be ok. I am really appreciating others responses and experiences to try and settle my mind with this! Xxx

Sounds delicious. Try not to worry too much. I'm firmly of the opinion that the rules are more about controlling women than preventing harm to babies. My Japanese friend was livid about the guidance on sashimi at the time she was pregnant. Ranted on about how western food was so much worse Grin

Yes, cooked/melted is absolutely fine as the heat kills the bacteria. Even if you did have it cold, the actual chance of anything happening to your baby is extremely minimal.

It's totally normal to worry though....Google is a great source of info but also a pregnant woman's worst enemy. The more you read, the more you will find 'don't do this', 'don't do that', 'avoid this', 'careful of that'.... it's a minefield. We are all in the same position, just doing the best we can to be safe and healthy but also trying to stay sensible and avoid unnecessary anxiety.

OhTediosity · 30/08/2024 08:43

Glad you are feeling calmer today OP.

It is normal to worry a little but if you find that the anxious thoughts become intrusive and stop you from enjoying your usual day to day life then please tell your midwife. A minority of women can develop quite debilitating ante and post natal anxiety even if they have always had robust mental health before their pregnancy, and there is support and treatment available.

Newmumtobe2025 · 30/08/2024 08:43

@sel2223 thank you❤️

@OhTediosity Thank you.
I feel calmer but still overwhelmed.
There are so many guidelines and the list of causes listeria can cause to baby has frightened me and then states it can take 10’weeks to even know it’s in your system. ……. There it is… even from Me typing that to you now, I know is showing I am clearly still anxious!! - I am going to call the midwife today anyway as have to update my address so I might just have a chat about this whole thing and mention I clearly am feeling anxious. Really appreciate your response xx

The middle of the cheese is safer than the rinds. Did you eat just the squishy part? Mmmmmmm.

Newmumtobe2025 · 30/08/2024 13:28

@MrsTerryPratchett it was a soft Gorgonzola and it was the middle but not close to rind. xx

Following everyones kind inputs, own experiences and opinions. I spoke to a midwife this morning(was calling about whooping cough injection appointment anyway) and she said - “ not to worry now you have eaten it, there have been 36 cases registered in the uk and wales per year in recent years, if you divide that between our population then the risk is so low. It’s never to rule it out, but see how you go if you start to feel unwell in a couple weeks then go straight to GP. Until then push to back of mind.”

Thanks again to all. Xxx
