Membrane Sweep

If you had a membrane sweep and believe it helped to induce your labour, a few questions please!

How did you feel immediately after the sweep?
How long after the sweep did it take to start feeling contractions/to start thinking ‘yes this is it, I’m in labour’?

I had one 3 hours ago and so far feel nothing.

First sweep I had cramping straight after but nothing came from it

2nd sweep I also had cramping after, and within 12 hours I started having contractions

Felt fine. Went into Labour the following am. Coincidence? No way to know…I was toward the end of my pregnancy.

1st sweep I had cramping and light bleeding after. Cramps went and it passed (I think my oxytocin levels tanked because I had a mild panic about it starting - or maybe nothing was related!)

2nd sweep I had cramps after. Contractions started the next day - very mild throughout the day and it just felt like a tummy ache. They got really strong by dinner time, the day after the sweep.

I was 10 days late, so the sweep may or may not have moved things along.

JudyJulie · 29/08/2024 20:09

Sweep at 3.30pm, first contractions before 8pm (I was in my evening class when they started), baby at lunchtime the next day.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 29/08/2024 20:11

I had one at about 3pm and started to feel cramping within the hour. A few irregular contractions that evening which tailed off at around midnight. The next day nothing until I went for a long walk in the afternoon and then it all kicked off around 5pm. Gave birth at 11am the next morning.

Thanks ladies.
I was half hoping I’d wake up in the middle of the night to some cramping but nope, absolutely nothing happening downstairs at all 👎🏼

24 hours after I started losing my mucus plug and had quite bad back ache. Contractions started 24 hours after that. Baby born 24 hours after that. I think the sweep did help move things along.

Hello! I've just had one too. 2cm dilated, the midwife seemed quite enthusiastic about my chances of going into labour soon. I'm 39+4 though and my son came at 41+5 so we'll see! How many weeks are you @HashB ?

hi @Berrynamechange
Im 41+2 and royally miserable! The midwife keeps talking about keeping my oxytocin high and I’m just like, how do I do that when I’m so p*ssed off? 😂
I’ve still had zero pains/cramps. Have you left feeling anything?

Oh god 41+2 is miserable - surely your baby be along any moment now. Did your midwife give any indication of how favourable things are looking from your cervix etc?

Do you have an induction booked?

No nothing happening here, except a bit of spotting. I think it can take a while to work (if it works at all). I'm planning to do a couple of longish walks this weekend if things don't kick off overnight. And lots of colostrum harvesting.

Is it your first baby?

She's not wrong though.

After my sweep I badgered my husband to have sex in the hope that it would kick things off. The sex wasn't very enjoyable but he made me cry laughing and I think all the laughing was what started my labour.

Is there anything you can watch which is guaranteed to have you in stitches?

Berrynamechange · 30/08/2024 13:11

@MissScarletInTheBallroom I think meeting my friend and having a good giggle over something (can't remember what now) is what finally started off my first labour!

My midwife said my cervix was soft and I was 1-2cm dilated. I should have asked about effacement even though I’m not wholly sure I understand what it is ha, annoyingly I forgot.
They tried two sweeps prior to this one and couldn’t on either occasion as my cervix was totally closed, so at least yesterday showed progress even if it wasn’t successful.
I have an induction booked for tomorrow but I really wanted this to work to avoid it.

Good plan on the walking! My dog is loving life at the moment, so many walks!

Oh, fingers crossed being dilated now means induction will be easier, even if you don't go into labour spontaneously.

I am wondering if my midwife has raised my hopes a little too much by saying how favourable things are looking down there for going into labour soon...she's in her 60s though so you'd think she's felt a lot cervixes. Or whatever the plural of cervix is!

Berrynamechange · 30/08/2024 22:08

Well...I'm having contractions 😮

UrsulaSings123 · 30/08/2024 22:36

I had several sweeps and none of them did anything I'm afraid! I was only 38 weeks though and went in for induction at 39 weeks so still a bit early to be naturally ready.

shockeddoesnntcutit · 31/08/2024 02:01

I had a sweep at 2:30 and my waters broke at 6:30. My waters breaking was the first sign with contractions starting about 8:00 and little one arriving at 4:54 :)

mrssunshinexxx · 31/08/2024 04:17

Had 4 sweeps with both pregnancies none of first pregnancy worked
The last one at 40+6. Had at 3pm and went into labour at midnight , likely coincidence though due to gestation as she said my cervix was closed

Berrynamechange · 31/08/2024 14:22

Are you ok @HashB ?

My baby's here, arrived 24hrs after the sweep

Xxx

Berrynamechange · 31/08/2024 14:22

Hope all's well with you x

Elbone · 31/08/2024 14:26

I’ve had three kids, 6 sweeps and they all came before the next step which was induction so I’m guessing the second sweeps helped.

hiddeneverythin · 31/08/2024 14:33

Sorry but I had eight and nothing happened 🫣

hiddeneverythin · 31/08/2024 14:36

Also, I've now rtft and sympathise. I was sixteen days overdue with my first and had no idea they even let anybody go that long x

Namechangedforthis60 · 31/08/2024 15:35

I had one with my last baby (dc4) and he was born 50 mins later… however my hind waters had already gone and I was 1-2 cm dilated so this is probably not helpful!
best of luck, hope you have a nice easy labour!
