Do they still listen to heartbeat at midwife app?

So I was last pregnant 12 years ago. I have found out I am pregnant again and I have my first midwife appointment in a few weeks. I should be about 9 weeks by then. Do they still listen to the heartbeat at the midwife appointment? I know they used to when you were around this far along but don’t know if they have stopped doing it?

My midwife never listened to a heartbeat in all my pregnancy but I would have thought 9 weeks was too early regardless?

My midwife has listened for fetal heartbeat at appointments from 16 weeks on. I know some trusts prefer to leave it even later than that as there's a better chance of hearing baby and if they don't (I think it can be tricky when they're still small) obviously women get scared. 9 weeks seems very early to me for that

Mine was from 16 weeks where they listened to heartbeat. Can be difficult to find so they wouldn’t do it any earlier I wouldn’t have thought x

Same here. 9 weeks will presumably just be booking in, paperwork etc. 16 weeks earliest with my two (2 and 4 years ago)

It depends on your area; I'm in the midlands and they don't do that till 24 weeks I think it was?

CooksDryMeasure · 28/08/2024 14:03

They won’t even try till 16 weeks and even then will reassure you it can be hard to pick up the heartbeat that early in case they can’t find it.

Thanks everyone. As you can tell I feel like this is my first time having a baby! Haha. I feel clueless!
I’m feeling so anxious with it all hoping that everything is going to be okay but I know this is normal. Just have to go with the flow! X

NICE guidelines say they shouldn’t listen to the FH routinely as it can give false reassurance so it depends how strictly they abide by them.

Negangirlxx · 28/08/2024 14:17

24 weeks was the earliest they did it for me.

sel2223 · 28/08/2024 14:53

Only 16 weeks onwards in my area

Welshcake15 · 28/08/2024 14:55

In my area they only listen at the 24 week scan onwards because it's not as easy to pick up before then and may cause worry if they can't find the heartbeat.

CluelessInLondon · 28/08/2024 14:57

I heard the heartbeat at my dating scan (and subsequent scans since), but the midwife didn't listen to it at any of my normal appointments until 25 weeks. You probably won't have a 25 week appointment though as it's not your first baby, so if your midwife offers to listen to the heartbeat it might be at your 28 week appointment.

Dyra · 28/08/2024 15:34

From 16 weeks yes, and at each scan. As my second was a high risk pregnancy (previous pre-eclampsia) I had the same appointment schedule as a FTM.

Rory17384949 · 28/08/2024 16:01

9 weeks is very early, mine didn't even try until I was further along- definitely after 12 weeks

Straightomyhead · 28/08/2024 16:06

Mine was from 16 weeks onwards, so after my first scan.

The first time they found it instantly and some of the ones after that it took a bit longer.

Bluesea14 · 28/08/2024 16:17

Mine did at 16 weeks x

Peonies12 · 28/08/2024 16:35

Mine offered it from the 16 week appointment onwards. I don't think it can be heard at 9 weeks. I've never heard the heart beat at a scan, only when at midwife appointments and when i went in for monitoring due to reduced movement.

ladycarlotta · 28/08/2024 20:50

My last baby 5.5 years ago they listened to it from 16 weeks, but this time round they've never done it once and I am now 35 weeks. I think things have changed, at least in my trust, even within the last few years.
