Recurrent miscarriage clinic whilst pregnant

Hi there

I have had 3 miscarriages in 11 months. The last in June where I had surgery. I was then referred to the local recurrent miscarriage clinic. They accepted the referral 2 months later but certain tests needed to be done.

Whilst these tests were done I have become pregnant again. But the EPU won’t put me under the recurrent miscarriage protocol as I haven’t had my first appointment with them. My test lines are still fairly light although I have now stopped testing but I’m not hopeful.

Grateful to understand if anyone else has been pregnant whilst under the care of a recurrent miscarriage clinic and what steps were taken?

Thank you in advance.

I was but because I was pregnant they took me off until they saw what happened with pregnancy if it helps I went on to have a baby girl so don't lose hope

@ImHopeful2023 Thank you that’s really helpful to know. Trying to be realistic in a world where there’s no way to have true assurance!

Sorry this is so frustrating for you, it’s like you feeling like you’re slipping through the cracks of help. Congratulations on your pregnancy though!

Mine is a little different; I had my appointment at the RM Clinic on the Thursday and then found out I was pregnant again on the Sunday (so like 3 days later). My hospital have been amazing though and kept me under the clinic and I’ve had medication and scans every 2 weeks. I have one more scan with them on Tuesday where I should be 11 weeks all being well. Anxiety through the roof.

Is there anyone in EPAU you can speak to in order to get any early scans due to recurrent MC?

@Jellybelly888 ah I’m so glad you’ve managed to get the care you need. Really useful to hear your experience.

After lots of back and forth with the RMC they have spoken to the EPU and they have said I will be offered the same protocol as recurrent miscarriage patients. Just annoying I’ve had to do the legwork!

First EPU scan is booked for 2 weeks so hopefully I make it to that point.

glad to hear that they've sorted it out! Fighting your corner on this one is probably the last thing you needed in the situation.

I was pregnant quite a few times under the recurrent miscarriage clinic (recurrent miscarriages gonna... recurrent miscarry, I guess...) and had regular scans with them as well as EPU as and when. The communication between the two was never the best. On the other hand it was actually lovely to see my RM consultant so thrilled when I had another viable pregnancy, and they offered me an additional reassurance scan for after I would have officially 'graduated' from their care.

Fingers crossed your pregnancy goes well and you never need to see the RM team again, OP.

My friend found out she was pregnant again at her first miscarriage clinic appointment, they put her on high dose folic acid, daily aspirin and progesterone. She had a healthy baby.
The folic acid and aspirin could be worth a try

I became pregnant whilst on the waiting list for recurrent miscarriage clinic. No NHS movement so I went privately and was prescribed aspirin and progesterone - still pregnant now.

at my twelve week scan they were shocked that I hadn’t been asked to come for regular scans (and said I should have been)

I'd wait to get medical advice on the aspirin. They told me to take a low dose of aspirin daily as I was over 40 and I think it was shown to help stop pre eclampsia. Which over 40s are more likely to get. But in general aspirin isn't advised in pregnancy. High folic acid may have been because she had a high BMI which is what I've heard it's used for. I've never heard about it having an effect on miscarriage but i could be wrong.

Low dose aspirin is fine in pregnancy and won’t cause any adverse effects if not needed by the body but could potentially save a miscarriage. This is for 75mg aspirin only, not a full aspirin tablet.

It’s usually the first port of call for a woman who’s experienced multiple miscarriages. It’s not about women over 40 or pre eclampsia, it’s about free flowing blood during the creation of a placenta between weeks 6 and 10 of a pregnancy.
