Low lying placenta 32 weeks - chances of moving?

hopingforapeainapod · 27/08/2024 13:30

At my 20 week scan I was told I had a low lying posterior placenta but not to worry as 95% of the time it moves up. Anyway just had a scan at 32 weeks up and placenta is still low, roughly 6mm from cervix (they want it 20-30mm+) and they think it’s very unlikely to move but I will be rescanned at 36 weeks and if still low I will need a c section. Just wondering if anyone had any similar experiences? I’m also curious as to when people had their c sections…

I had the same.
As expected, it didn't move.
C section at 38 weeks.
All wen't fine. He's a big strapping teenager now.

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 27/08/2024 13:43

I believe with it being posterior, its much less likely to move enough at this stage

hopingforapeainapod · 28/08/2024 09:26

@ManhattanPopcorn that’s good to know! Out of interest, did you have it with any subsequent pregnancies?

@BeautyAndTheBump1 yes that’s what I’ve heard as well…

@Pickleton1992 I’m really not sure how to feel about it all tbh! I had psyched myself up to at least try for a vaginal birth and I was so surprised when the sonographer said it hasn’t moved as I haven’t had any bleeding or anything! I don’t mind the thought of a c section (too much) but I just wish I 100% knew one way or another… even though it’s apparently incredibly unlikely I’m worried I’m going to spend the next 4 weeks mentally prepping for a c section and then find out it has actually moved! I’m also a bit nervous cause I’m not having my next scan until 36+2, and I have read online that with placenta previa they may schedule you in for a c section at 36/37 weeks, which seems incredibly soon / a very quick turnaround! I wish I could speak to a doctor / consultant about it but apparently I can’t until I’ve had my 36 week scan… baby is also very much breech / oblique which they think is because the placenta is in the way!

@Pickleton1992 yup first baby! Weirdly I had heard about placenta previa because my mum had it with my youngest brother (although I don’t think there is a genetic link, but I have heard it is more common if you are having a boy!) I think her placenta was very borderline but she had a scheduled c section but ended up going into labour early anyway!

My due date is very close to yours - 23rd of October! I too am also feeling very unprepared as I assumed I would have a lot more time!

Is your placenta posterior or anterior? I’ve heard that anterior placentas have more chance of moving as your uterus does a lot more expanding at the front!

@Pickleton1992 I know! I am having a boy yes :) and placenta is also posterior! I think I am going to try and take the same approach - not sure how the relaxing will go but we shall see! Let me know how your appointment with the consultant goes on Monday, I’d be interested to hear what they have to say…

Hi All, sorry to jump on!

I'm in a similar situation. I had a scan at 32 weeks and the placenta was still within the 2cm so they said they would re-scan at 36 weeks but then when I got my appointment it's actually scheduled for 34 weeks. I have it this week so trying to just not think about it too much until then but I really want to try for a vaginal birth!

@Pickleton1992 thanks for updating me! I’m sort of vicariously living through you as we are in the same boat but I don’t get to see a consultant! I live in Oxford and here everyone gets a 36 week scan regardless of placenta position so I think that’s why I won’t see a doctor until then, but it does feel mad when I then may have a c section at 37 weeks! How are you feeling now that you’ve spoken to them?

@2doggos best of luck with your scan! You never know if it’s still low at 34 weeks you could ask them if you could have another one at 36? Nothing is ever guaranteed and I have read stories online of people whose placentas moved very late on so you never know!

@Pickleton1992 @hopingforapeainapod Thank you both!! Will update when I've had my scan, I will definitely be asking for another scan at 36 if it's still not moved.

I thought that initially when they said they were going to rescan at 36 weeks and that would potentially only give me a week until the c-section if they decided to do it at 37 weeks so I'm glad I'm having this one at 34 weeks.

2doggos · 04/09/2024 16:02

@hopingforapeainapod @Pickleton1992 Good news! My placenta has moved! Almost 1cm in 2 weeks so it's well out of the way now so back to prepping for a vaginal birth :) Hope everything is well with you both

hopingforapeainapod · 04/09/2024 16:20

@2doggos wow that’s great news - can’t believe how much it’s moved in only 2 weeks! Is your placenta posterior or anterior do you know? Woo really happy for you, hopefully that’s a load off your mind!

@Pickleton1992 at 20 weeks it just said it was reaching then at 32 it was 1.8cm and yesterday it was 2.7cm away so well out of the way now

hopingforapeainapod · 05/09/2024 13:41

@2doggos that’s great, and it’s even better cause you’re well out of the way and so don’t have to worry about being borderline!

I’m really struggling with not knowing, I can’t believe I’ve got another 3 week wait until my 36 week scan. I keep wondering whether to book a private scan in between but husband thinks it’s a waste of money as nothing will be confirmed anyway till 36 weeks. I just wish I knew either way!

OP posts:
2doggos · 05/09/2024 13:52

@hopingforapeainapod sorry I missed your earlier post, I have a posterior placenta which they say are not as likely to move.

That must be frustrating! I thought I was going to be in the same boat as originally they did say rescan at 36 weeks but then they ended up booking it in for 34 weeks

Hopefully yours will have moved too!

Hey @Pickleton1992 thanks for checking in! So I don’t have my 36 week scan until a week on Wednesday - the wait is killing me! Just really want to know one way or another now. I’m meant to have packed my hospital bag but I keep putting it off as a) it makes it seem all too real b) I’m terrible at decision making and c) I don’t really know what birth to plan for! Best of luck for your appointment tomorrow, let me know how it goes - are you having a scan as well?

@Pickleton1992 ah I’m really sorry, that’s really frustrating! So annoying when you build up something in your head and then it doesn’t happen… I get why they want to leave the scans / consultations as late as possible but it does just leave you on tenderhooks!
