Can't cope with the nausea

I'm 8+1 and I've had horrible nausea from the beginning. I am at my wits end and have been crying most of the day as I feel so awful. Has anyone found any at home remedies for nausea? Ginger biscuits have not helped ☹️

My gp is worse than useless and I can't even get an appointment with them. I will try again tomorrow but they just keep telling me to speak to my midwife (who I'm haven't even met yet) and I'm sure it's my gp who has to prescribe something for nausea not the midwife anyway.

I had morning sickness until I was around 20 weeks pregnant. I really had to push the GP to prescribe me anti sickness tablets.

I haven't tried ice cold drinks I'll give that a try now.

The anti sickness bands aren't doing anything but I wasn't that hopeful.

I just asked DH to put some grapes in the freezer and he thinks I've gone mad 😂

I have some of those make your own ice lollies so I'll get DH to make some and see if that helps. Thank you for the tips.

Have you tried wearing the anti sickness bands 24-7? I had to do this (probably not recommended), but I found this was the only way they had an effect...it was like the benefit accumulates or something. The other things that helped were constant nibbling on bland crackers, and getting as much rest as possible. The nausea was so much worse when I was fatigued. It's hell, I do hope you get somewhere with your GP.

  • bland and cold or cooled down food
  • vitamin B6 from holland and barrett’s
  • salty snacks like the salt and vinegar stick crisps
  • eating very small portions frequently
  • when i stopped taking pregnacare vitamins and switched to just vitamin d, b6 it gave me some sort of relief
  • anything remotely sweet or sour made it worse except for fruits like mango, grapes, kiwi and pineapple
missjeanbrodie123 · 27/08/2024 00:00

I feel for you OP as I was exactly the same. Coca cola can help, combined with salty crisps, but other than that, take time off work and try to sleep as much as possible as that makes part of the day "disappear".
Sounds gross, but sometimes trying to make yourself sick gives an hour's reprieve.
Mine abated by 12 weeks. I still felt queasy, but not that terrible, terrible nausea.

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 27/08/2024 00:04

Eat some plain carbs the second you wake up- before you even drink anything.
Drinking water on an empty stomach set me off something terrible.
Plain yoghurt also helped just little spoonfuls here and there.
Avoid fatty food.
Don't let yourself get either too hungry or too full.

I was pregnant with twins who were born at 7 months. I was 9 st 2lbs before pregnancy and weighed only 7stones three weeks after giving birth. I was sick after every meal and felt sick all the time. Teaching teenagers was difficult! It does pass in that you forget how awful it was but I said I’d never get pregnant again. And haven’t.
Crystallised ginger helped-lots of it. Anything aniseed too. Small meals often-although I was always sick afterwards. Watercress helped-I have no idea why!
You have my sympathy.

hopeful4us · 27/08/2024 10:16

Feeling horrific this morning. How are you doing @fortheloveofcollies ??

Superscientist · 27/08/2024 10:59

Medication is the main thing that helped me. I was on cyclizine in the first and third trimesters with my daughter - who knew sickness can return?!
With my second pregnancy I had cyclizine and prochlorpreazine before losing the pregnancy and the nausea continued for a few days after the loss.

I found stronger flavours helpful anything that tasted the same going in and coming out were out. Cherry tomatoes and celery were my go tos in the second trimester and with my daughter I lived off tinned peaches. I couldn't tolerate water with my daughter I could sip hot water and honey and with my second pregnancy sipping smoothies helped. Their thicker consistency and freshness helped.

Try find ways to eat when you can. I lost 4kg in the first trimester with my daughter and then started losing weight again in the third trimester. I was back at my prepregnancy weight by 10 days pp and by the time I stopped breastfeeding at 10 months I lost another 1.5stone and was very underweight and struggled because of it. In my recent pregnancy I lost 3kg and still losing. So I was heading in the same direction as the first one although carrying a few extra kg than the first pregnancy! In pregnancy the weight loss wasn't a problem but it meant I had lost my buffer to get through newborn days especially when I ended up on a restricted diet due to breastfeeding and allergy baby

sel2223 · 27/08/2024 11:32

You have my full sympathies OP, I'm 9 weeks and feeling very much the same, it's horrific.

I did suffer nausea and MS in my first pregnancy but definitely don't remember it being as bad as it is this time round! Last night it was so bad I went to bed early hoping that would help but I ended up back and forwards to the bathroom all night being sick.
Woke up this morning and still really nauseous, I've taken a few hours off work to come home and wallow in self pity.

I'm going to try some of the tips on this thread and just hope something works

fortheloveofcollies · 27/08/2024 11:57

@hopeful4us I'm feeling the same unfortunately. I was on hold with the gp for 1.5 hours and when I finally got through they had no appointments. They wouldn't book me in for tomorrow and said I need to call in the morning again. If I can't get an appointment tomorrow I think I'll change surgery.

I've found vanilla ice cream has helped a little today. Today is harder as I wfh and DH is in the office so I have the dogs as well.

I am in exactly the same position at the moment im 7+3. Eating little but often and fizzy drinks have helped me. Go to the drs and ask for anti sickness meds I got a prescription for it today

SarahLHs · 27/08/2024 14:30

Boiled sweets used to really help me

StarGirrrl77 · 27/08/2024 14:39

Just to add to the recommendations of wristbands, it took me a few goes to get the button on the exact correct point on my wrist, and once I worked that out it was miraculous! Can you try them again and give them a jiggle about til you feel a change? And to give you some hope, my nausea disappeared at about 11 weeks when I thought I was stuck with it forever. Hopefully it will leave you soon.

SKLM · 27/08/2024 21:42

Fingers crossed for you tomorrow OP I hope you manage to get an appointment and a prescription.

Jellybelly888 · 28/08/2024 18:07

It’s vile, I am still feeling it now at 10w. I have found eating little and often helps a lot, even though I absolutely don’t feel like eating.

My saviours:

  • plain crisps
  • toast with butter
  • crumpets
  • ritz crackers
  • Plain jacket potatoes
  • potato waffles
  • cold water with ice in
  • recently citrus fruit has helped me for some reason but not before 9 weeks
  • not eating normal sized portions

I’ve found eating my evening meal split into two has helped. By me saying meal, it’s a combination of the above 😂

Sending supportive energy.

Mine was awful in first trimester and some of the things I found most helpful:

  • Ice cold water, through a straw
  • Plain crackers
  • Ready salted crisps
  • Pickled onions
  • Frozen grapes (put them in freezer overnight, like little slush balls and so refreshing)
  • Rest/sleep as much as you can
  • Fresh air, even a little walk if you can manage it

It’s such a tough time, just do whatever you can to get through it. It doesn’t last forever, good luck OP x

Thank you! I am also looking for the solution although it is for loss of appetite. I am only 6 weeks and 2 days and food is not appealing at all.

Superscientist · 28/08/2024 18:42

Have things at hand to nibble on. I kept a pot of dried fruit and nuts. It took me 10 minutes to nibble a cashew but it did help with eating with no appetite.

Sometimes you have to literally walk around the supermarket and see what you are drawn to that doesn't make you feel ill to look at. It will pass though x

Literally me today wandering aimlessly round the supermarket.

Ended up with pitta bread and hummus (wishful thinking), fresh juice and salted crisps

And then the worst thing is by the time you get home you've gone off what you picked 😂

I cried real tears in Tesco because I couldn't stomach pizza 😂😂😂

fortheloveofcollies · 01/09/2024 09:31

Thank you everyone. I finally managed to get a prescription from my gp (cyclizine) and it's helping a lot. It doesn't removed the nausea completely but I feel much better
