Baby gone V quiet

I'm 34+ weeks and the baby has been really active so far but has gone quiet over the last couple of days (today and yesterday really). Still the odd bump and thump but nothing like before. Should I be worried or is it just having a rest ?

apparently you need to feel 10 movements a day. If you don't, I would call my MW. Might just be that the baby is unusually tired, but if its worries you, a quick call might put your mind at rest.

mad4mybaby · 17/04/2008 14:33

as baby gets bigger it has less room and is therefore normal to slow down. If you are worried you should go to the midwife just to get checked and they will do babys heartbeat. Monitor how many movements you get for rest of day.

I rememeber this happening with ds and i think there should be a minimum of 10 movements a day?? Dont quote me on that though

Sazisi · 17/04/2008 14:34

They do stop flipping about quite so much at about that stage though, less space. Keep a kick chart if you don't already, and ring your mw if movements are under 10

Sazisi · 17/04/2008 14:35

oops - said exactly same thing as mad4

Bky · 17/04/2008 14:35

Do you feel worried? I think this is a good indicator of whether you should be or not.

If the baby is usually pretty active then I think it is worth getting check on your labour ward. Their is more than likely nothing at all wrong but def worth getting it noted and checked out if the pattern is different to normal.

I delivered my baby girl 5 weeks ago, I was induced due to reduced movements, happening pretty regulary and a slowing down of her heart rate. She is perfectly fine but am very glad that I got checked out at the hospital when I noticed a change and felt concerned.

I would say as you are taking the time to post on here that your do have some concerns so ring the hospital go and get on the moniter for half an hour and put your mind at rest.

Caz10 · 17/04/2008 14:39

yip, go and get it checked. you'll be fine, but you won't relax until you do! if you don't want to go to the hosp can you see your community MW? I saw mine once or twice at short notice, she listened in and reassured me.

Jenkeywoo · 17/04/2008 14:40

if you're worried please do and get checked out by the midwife - they never mind seeing someone who is worried about reduced movements as it can save a babies life. My dd stopped moving at 35 weeks and was delivered by emergency c-section - we then found out that the placenta was failing and if I hadn't taken myself off to the hospital then she might not have made it. I'm not saying this to scare you and I'm sure your little bubba is just running out of room but if you're worried it's always worth checking. best wishes and I hope these last few weeks of pregnancy go smoothly.

krugerparkrules · 17/04/2008 14:48

beth - one way you can check is to have a very cold drink, (with sugar), and then lie very still, you should get some kicks after that .... your baby could be running out of room for gymnastics! (You probably know this about the cold drink but thought i would mention it in case you didnt)
I had this happen to me at around 34-35 weeks, (baby wasnt doing usual kicking even after drinking very cold orange juice) went to the hospital and they ran a heart monitor on me and babies heart to check that everything was okay with my DD ... they would MUCH rather you went, get some piece of mind and found out everything was okay. Why not phone up your materrnity unit and let them know you need a quick appointment ..

beth13 · 18/04/2008 09:28

Hi there all, thanks for this - I did go along to the maternity ward yesterday and they stuck me on a monitor and everything seems to be fine. Got to go back today just to check but am feeling much better now. Thanks for your replies x

That's good news. Glad you went and check at least you've put your mind at rest now

Thankyouandgoodnight · 18/04/2008 12:41

I'm at 27+ weeks and have the same thing just today - should I be worried??

beth13 · 18/04/2008 14:48

I have to say, I was only there for half an hour and its put my mind at rest so please do go along if only to ease your mind before the weekend. The midwives are so helpful and completely understand. I said I felt a bit of a fraud because the baby was moving when I was on the monitor and I had said I hadn't felt anything for a couple of days and they said that often happens. Basically, they would obviously rather you went along than worried.

I always had a temporary period of no/low movement around the 30 week mark. Midwives never minded checking it out, but it was always fine.

NotABanana · 18/04/2008 15:24

I do wish people wouldn't go on about less room for baby to move towards the end. The fact is if there is any chnage in the baby's usual pattern of movements then you need to be seen. Especially if you are not getting 10 movements in a 12 hour period.

fettleandbabyfettle · 18/04/2008 15:31

I so agree Notabanana!

I don't want to over-worry people, but please, please, please if you ever feel you have less movements than normal, go straight in for a check-up.

My best friend has just lost her baby at 36 weeks. She felt no movements for 2 days before she went in for check-up and they found no heart beat. I wouldn't wish what had happened to her on anyone, so if you are ever concerned even slightly go in! Midwives would rather you were worrying about nothing than deal with what she had to go through.

Going in earlier may not have saved her baby, but she'll never know.

So my advice is, drink a very cold drink and lie quietly on your side, if you still feel no movement within 30 mins go straight in.

NotABanana · 18/04/2008 15:34

I feel so strongly because I nearly lost my baby too.

All fine - Sat
Nothing - Sun
Born by emergency section - Monday

So sorry for your friend fettleandbabyfettle.

NotABanana · 19/04/2008 18:29

Any news Beth13?

ImflightbutIcantlogintoday · 19/04/2008 18:37

I heard of a woman whose baby was suddenly very very active and then quiet. It turned out he had got tangled in the cord
I have never forgotten that.
Glad it was Ok, Beth
