Birth marks

Hi all, does anyone know if birth marks (of the more severe kind) would be picked up on in an ultrasound scan? I am having horrible thoughts/panicking about my baby being born with one...I'm 36 weeks pregnant and need to stop thinking the worst!

I'm not sure about being picked up on scans, but I think (think being the operative word here) that the placement and look of birthmarks is somewhat hereditary, so, that might offer you some comfort.

Also, anecdotally, my DD had a bright red mark on her eyelid when she was born, she's 7 now and it's not visible at all. I can't remember what age she was when it faded but for the first month we all thought it was a birth injury (forceps) until it stayed out for a few years.

Also anecdotally, I went to school with a girl that had a huge strawberry mark on her chest, just above what turned into her cleavage. When we were 13-ish, she got it removed on the NHS, very minimal scarring back then, we're heading towards 40 now so they'd probably be able to remove a more pronounced birthmark without any scarring now a days.

Don't worry yourself OP, there is literally nothing you can do to mitigate against it, as long as baby is healthy anything else that comes along you can and will deal with!

Good luck for your birth and try to relax and enjoy your last couple of weeks before baby arrives! You've plenty of time over the next few years to stress the small stuff!

That’s so random 😅 why are you worried about a birthmark? On the off chance there is why would it matter it doesn’t effect their health ?

Thank you so much @FrazzledHippy Really appreciate your words of kindness and understanding. I think I'm just thinking worst case (although I know there are far worse things that could happen). @Adamsapple89 I am worried about how it might impact the baby's mental health as he grows up etc. Anyway, as Frazzled Hippy says, there is nothing I can do about it so will try my best to put it out of mind and pray for a happy and healthy baby.

I understand worrying about random things, it's crazy what you can fixate on when your hormones are going wild!

We had lots of extra scans with DD as they were worried about her growth and on one of them her head was the shape of a cauliflower. Now, nobody at the hospital passed comment on it, so logically I knew there was nothing to worry about. Bugger me though, I spent the next three weeks looking at the print out and stressing myself silly that there was something wrong!

It all turned out fine in the end though.

It's important to remember too that if she does have a birth mark, wherever/whatever it is, they're much brighter in colour when they're born than they'll end up being. DD had the one on her eyelid that faded away to nothing over the years and she's got a strawberry on the back of her head. She was born with loads of black hair, but you could see it through the hair still, it looked so big and bright. Funnily enough, after reading the thread the other day I went looking for it when I was doing her hair and it's ever so pale now, I had to really search!

@FrazzledHippy I really appreciate your words of reassurance and kindness. I am glad things turned out fine for you, and I hope it does for us too 🙏🏻
