Hello All , Please can we chat about Maternity Pay?

Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) is paid for up to 39 weeks. You get:

  • 90% of your average weekly earnings (before tax) for the first 6 weeks
  • £184.03 or 90% of your average weekly earnings (whichever is lower) for the next 33 weeks

OK so I work full time and have been employed since 2020. I have 25 days holiday per year plus 8 bank holidays (PAID) 33 days.

I'm really hoping I can have 12 months off , if not it will be 9 months or 10 months if I bank all of my annual leave.

Please can somebody work out for me how much I will come out with each month?( 9 months)

I earn £28,389.44 per year
Top line is £2365.79
Tax / National Insurance / Benefit in Kind / Private healthcare = £405.48

Net pay after deductions = £1,921.26

How much will I come out with?

In the meantime my partner and I are trying to save as much as we can.

Thank you for reading my post.

xx

Do you have any additional occupational pay?

https://www.thesalarycalculator.co.uk/sickpay.php Will work it out for you

as smp is paid weekly it will fluctuate a little depending whether there’s 4/5 weeks in your monthly pay period

smp is based on gross pay but you’ll still pay contributions unless otherwise agreed with your employer

~@LottieMary Thanks for replying.

No additional occupational pay

So I work 5 days week , paid monthly and earn 28,389.44 per year
Which box do I tick to work out 90% for 6 weeks and SMP for 33 weeks?

Would you be able to calculate for me? xx

@LottieMary I saw an example online -

Jo earns £215 each week before tax. She starts maternity leave.

90% of £215 is £193.50. Jo will get £193.50 of statutory maternity pay each week for the first 6 weeks of her maternity leave.

As £193.50 is more than £184.03, Jo will then get £184.03 of statutory maternity pay each week for the next 33 weeks of her maternity leave.

----------------------
I thought I would work my figures out with the above example

Yearly = £28,389.44
Monthly = £2365.54
Weekly = £545.89

Before MAT LEAVE take home pay = £1,921.26

I earn £545.89 each week before tax. She starts maternity leave.

90% of £545.89 is £491.30. I will get £491.30 of statutory maternity pay each week for the first 6 weeks of her maternity leave

4 weeks = £491.30 X 4 = £1965.20
2 Weeks & 2 weeks SMP = £491.30 X 2 = £982.60 £184.03 X 2 = £368.06 = £982.60 + £368.06 = £1350.66

As £491.30 is more than £184.03, I will then get £184.03 of statutory maternity pay each week for the next 33 weeks of her maternity leave.

4 weeks = £184.03 X 4 = £736.12

Does this sound right? xx

That looks right to me.

Check what your company policy is for your Benefit in Kind and Private healthcare is whilst you are on maternity leave.

For e.g. I keep my benefits for the whole 12 months, but they don't deduct the value from SMP.

Likewise pensions, my pension contributions stay at the same ££ pre maternity leave and isn't reduced or deducted from SMP.

Also to add, depending on your savings/ partners income you may also be entitled to child benefit, universal credit etc.

You can use the calculator on the hmrc website. Input your salary details and pay dates and it will give you the amounts www.gov.uk/maternity-paternity-calculator

Hi, in regards to this, I have worked my salary out in a similar way but would these figures be before tax? I am trying to find out, or do a calculation from an after tax perspective so that I can plan my monthly income more accurately.

crazycatlady89 · 21/04/2025 10:22

Hello lovely , so I've just had my SMP (£187 a week) and I came out with £785 ... I didn't pay any tax because we are in the new tax year and I won't be earning enough money to be taxed.

On my wage slip I just paid into my pension and private healthcare.

I've managed to be approved for universal credit as I'll be earning less than £8K this year , so UC are topping me up which is a massive help. Xx
