Another embarassing hairy problem. May be TMI for some! Help please.

Thank goodness for Mumsnet where I can post his and maybe someone is in a similar boat and can help.

We're talking nether region hair problems. i've always been quite a hairy girl and generally my bikini wax is adequate for 10 days but then needs doing again. Certainly thongs and skimpy bikinis have always been out of the question for me . I'm now 29 weeks pregnant wih my first and the hair has gone mad. I don't mind the hairy stomach as I can deal with that myself (body shop sugaring) but the hairy cleft between the butt checks and around the anus- not so good- am I becoming a man?
Seriously, has anyone else got this problem and what can I do? Is it the done thing to ask a beauty salon therapist to wax it away or is it far too much too ask- after all she'd have to prise my buttocks apart to reach the forest. (I did warn re. TMI!). Or is it qite a normal thing for her to have to do? I wouldn't mind a good trim but I cannot physically do it myself and it's too much of a passion killer to ask DH- I even get embarassed when he touches around there now. I know it's a minor issue compared with everything else that's going on, but if there is a simple solution, I'd love to hear it.

Okay, first of all, it's normal to seem hairier in pregnancy - basically your body holds onto stuff longer so for example your hair doesn't fall out like it normally would and so you end up looking a tad yeti-like. After pregnancy a lot of women complain they are losing tons of hair but it's just because during pregnancy the rate of shedding is much, much lower.

You also are suffering from the 'hormonal soup' effect where your hair is just lusher than usual so looks thicker and tuftier - and of course your body doesn't care if it's on your head or your bum!

You could just ignore the problem till you have delivered because it will go away and go back to normal or you can just ask the therapist to sort it - bear in mind though in late pregnancy you will be more aware of the pain because of the increased blood flow in that area. Also not being funny but you don't want to risk reacting to the wax and having a swollen fanny when you go into labour.

Can't you get an electric bikini trimmer?? I'm 33wks pregnant and can still manage to shave my fanjo and crevice region, just squat over a mirror! Failing that go to an out of town waxing place so you never have to see them again

whomovedmychocolate · 16/04/2008 21:34

Impressed with Calebsmum's ability to squat and shave at the same time.

calebsmum · 16/04/2008 21:45

Lean back against a wall, it's possible honest! Just make sure the doors locked would curl up and die if anyone caught me

expatinscotland · 16/04/2008 21:47

lady's hair trimmer.

all the way!

slim22 · 16/04/2008 21:52

yep, electric hair trimmer for ladies, then if you still can't bear it go to a salon. If they offer brazilians, then that's their job! don't see how they'll be offended.
You might feel really awkward when she asks you to go on all fours to do the crack [grin

With my first i went in for a full brazilian before birth. The lady was really lovely, she helped me practice my breathing during waxing

whomovedmychocolate · 16/04/2008 21:53

calebsmum - if I locked the door I would no doubt fall on the floor and break a hip . I plan to force DH into giving me a quick trim nearer my due date

Remotew · 16/04/2008 21:59

You could leave it be. It may grow back worse.

LynetteScavo · 16/04/2008 21:59

expat, tel me more about the lady's hair trimmer... ye who knows all about home hair removeal, and to whom I worhsip on the subject.

ie, WTF is it exactly?

expatinscotland · 16/04/2008 22:03

just your standard Phillips or Remington women's bikini electric shaver, Lynette. Available in any Boots or Argos for about £20.

Perfect for between waxing.

Just lather up and go! Well, I always use shaving gel.

I am a yetti and I hate it.

If I won Lotto, I'd have IPL on most of my entire body.

nappymadmummy · 16/04/2008 22:04

You can have it all waxed off at a salon. They won't think anything of it. Don't know how much it would hurt when pregnant but I hardly notice it being done.

Remotew · 16/04/2008 22:05

Does IPL get good results? I've heard mixed report and its so expensive. Be awful to waste the money and its grows back.

expatinscotland · 16/04/2008 22:29

it works best on my type - very dark hair on light skin.

LynetteScavo · 16/04/2008 22:31

I don't think you could IPL your anus....could you?......would you?

slim22 · 16/04/2008 22:36

NO IPL while pregnant though!

Had one session and then got pg. Stings a bit but not really painfull. You can have it done anywhere.
I'm doing the brazilian and yes, that's where it's most awkward.
Hopefully can resume soon.
Yes works best on light skin/dark hair combination.

expatinscotland · 16/04/2008 22:47

sure you can, lynette. if you have the money, they'll IPL you anywhere - including a Brazilian, which includes between your bum cheeks.

jocesar · 16/04/2008 22:53

Thanks guys. So is it fairly normal for women to have hair between their bum cheeks- I thought I was a lone freak? If the beauty therapist won't freak out then I'm quite happy enduring the pain!

expatinscotland · 16/04/2008 23:10

a beauty therapist who is trained to perform proper Brazilians - none of this paper knickers and protecting modesty bullshit, if you're that squeamish, a Brazilian's not for you! - should not ever 'freak out'.

she will be used to seeing hair there and as a professional, her job is to remove it well.

Seabright · 17/04/2008 08:48

Can anyone recommend a good Brazillian salon in Surrey, preferably in the area around Guildford/Woking/Godalming/Farnham/Haslemere.

I'd like to go somewhere where they'd sort out the between the cheeks hair too. I've had the paper-knicker waxing before and Expat's right, it's not ideal

cheerfulvicky · 17/04/2008 16:15

I've always been quite hairy in the areas you mentioned, and haven't noticed too much of an increase with being preg. I shave the bum as and when I feel like it, and used to shave my belly but have recently tried waxing it. OUCH! The hair grows in different directions, so it took about 4 days and 2 goes before most of it was off, then I plucked the strays. I'm trying to pluck the hairs on my belly as they grow back now, so it can never get really noticeable if you know what I mean...

Which reminds me, I must do my eyebrows! I've left them for months... Hehe.
You're not the only one, anyway. I was worrying about the birth and being hairy, but I have a feeling I won't give a flying feck by that point, so there's probably no point in worrying
