What happens in your first mw appointment after booking in?

Had booking in appointment at about 10 weeks and have next one on Monday at 14 weeks - what do they usually do?

Will they listen to the baby's heart or is it too soon? Do they do more blood tests? Do I have to pee on a stick again?

Thanks in advance.. this is my first

Have a look at the antenatal guidelines on the NICE website. They outline what you can expect to happen (or can ask to happen if it doesn't) at each appointment.

They asked me about whether or not I wanted the triple test etc, tested my urine and had a chat about how I felt.

They didn't listen to baby until 16 weeks when they took the blood for the triple test.

Congrats on your baby xx

Thanks MrsM - 454 pages - phew - better get my reading glasses on

Thanks Borglady - it's an exciting time isn't it! It's a shame I thought I might get to listen to the little mite's heartbeat..

They usually want a urine sample every time they see you from now on

MrsMattie · 16/04/2008 17:03

lol@toomuch - scroll down to the bit that says 'appointments schedule' or something like that!

fiodyl · 16/04/2008 17:06

the weeing on a stick is a compulsory requirement everytime you go anywhere whilst pregnant- or thats what it felt like to me anyway

KMUN · 16/04/2008 17:06

Pee bottle generally required everytime you go to MW from now on until birth, including labour admission, to check sugar levels and water intake. Don't expect much of MW appt's, they're a bit dull, unless you have loads of questions.

toomuchtimeonline · 16/04/2008 17:10

Aaah you mean page 102 - "What should happen at antenatal appointments" ..

It appears that other than an obsession with wee and blood pressure - not a whole lot happens..

.. it doesn't mention the heartbeat anywhere..

KMUN - you even have to pee on a stick when in labour!!?

KMUN · 16/04/2008 17:16

Yep, was advised to take a sample in and preparing at home slightly easier than forcing the issue when you're being admitted; and whenever you 'go' during the surreal experience, they generally want to check. Those ladies are obsessed!

MrsMattie · 16/04/2008 17:18

All MWs have a doppler so if you want to hear the heartbeat, just ask. Most of them will listen for it anyway. They may also measure your bump.

toomuchtimeonline · 16/04/2008 17:26

Thanks for your prompt response guys - MN is great isn't it

I will go prepared with a full bladder and sweetly ask the mw to try and listen for the heartbeat

oo - measuring the bump - that's a new one! Sounds fun!

MWs love to take your BP and make you pee in a bottle - expect this every time! Mine was more of a chat re: tests etc and info on scheduled appointments for scans. Didn't start listening to baby or measuring bump till 24 wks for me. My blood tests were done with 1st scan at 12wks & again at 28wks. I do think it depends where you live.

KMUN · 16/04/2008 18:30

Don't be disappointed if they don't want to do the heartbeat at this stage as it's not always physically detectable with a doppler so early, even though everything's fine. If you can't hear, it's just additional stress that you don't need, iyswim. 12 week scan is v.exciting though.

toomuchtimeonline · 17/04/2008 09:53

Thanks guys! I'll not get my hopes up about the heartbeat and will be ready to pee on a stick and relaxed for my blood pressure - all good to know! I had images of internal exams and stuff.. phew - thank god it's a lot easier than that

If you are slim they will prob be able to hear heartbeat at 14 weeks, but if you have belly padding they might not so depends on whether you want to ask or not!

toomuchtimeonline · 17/04/2008 10:37

I'm fairly average - although feel as though I have grown a fair amount of belly padding in the last 2 weeks - I'm brave so I'll ask anyway

Just a quick update - had my appointment this morning and as predicted she was obsessed with my pee and blood pressure!! She also used the doppler without me even having to prompt so I got to hear the bump's heartbeat which was amazing !

Thanks to all the lovely ladies for your advice last week
