Hi I was wondering if someone could help. In regards to shared parental leave do me and my partner have to live together or does it depend on his company policy ?

I don't think it matters if you live together as it's about who is caring for the baby at that time. If you're a teacher I'd recommend paying these guys https://www.teachersspl.co.uk/ they're really knowledgeable and it cost £65 but made me about £4000

Hi @Sara1988 do you mind if I ask, did you take 3 blocks of mat leave over a year or similar? And did you have to submit 3 different applications to your school, or have any trouble getting it approved?

I'm also a teacher and have read it's really advisable for us to use SPL since we can't accrue holiday, but dying to speak to someone who's actually successfully used it! Seems like a lot of teachers aren't aware of it, including here on The Staffroom.

@ridl14 so it's three forms which the spl team fill out for you. You can only do three blocks total. I'd really recommend paying the £65. I haven't gone on mat leave yet but all the women at my work place have done it. HR were not helpful at all and didn't seem to have a clue, that's why I think paying is worth it.

Not only do we not get holiday pay, we also get terrible mat leave pay when compared to other public servants and the private sector.

Thank you so much! I'll definitely look into the link you shared, it does sound well worth it. Can't believe we get such a raw deal!

I've found a template letter from my union to let my school know I'm pregnant when the new term starts and to ask about reasonable adjustments. I think I will use it, though when I asked about adjustments on the Staffroom, I got told I was overthinking it! Definitely don't want to be a teacher martyr when it comes to me and the baby's health

@ridl14 my school have been great and booked me in for a risk assessment at about 16 weeks and 24 weeks. I didn't really ask for any adjustments but I think it depends what subject you teach. I go back for four weeks before baby is due and won't be doing break and lunch duties
