Is having two early MCs good enough to tell EPU to monitor my third pregnancy?

I got my BFP three days. I had 1 early MC this March and 1 CP this May. So, Is having two early MCs good enough to tell EPU to monitor my third pregnancy?

I think they would only monitor if they had seen you in the two early miscarriages so it was 'on record' as it were. Always worth asking though.

In my area they only monitor after 3 I'm afraid to say but after 3 they monitored my next pregnancy which resulted in my son.

Wishing you all the best.

I mean you can’t “tell” them, you can certainly ask. If you have bleeding they should prescribe you progesterone, but otherwise monitoring won’t necessarily chang the outcome. I found it easier to get seen at EPU in my second pregnancy when I had bleeding, having had a MC befor.

Hi

Unfortunately no, I have also had 2
MC and will not get any help or assistance until it is 3 until one of them was in second trimester which it was for me

EPU agreed to see me and scan me at 7 weeks after two previous pregnancies. After I had been scanned and pregnancy viability was confirmed I was prescribed progesterone. I had problems with spotting before 7 weeks so was given hcg blood tests 48 hours apart x

You can't "tell" EPU to monitor.
You can ask what the procedure is given your previous history.

Good luck with your journey.

TheUndoing · 12/08/2024 21:17

Well you can’t “tell” them anything but you can certainly get in touch and ask nicely if they’ll support you. Most don’t until after three miscarriages so it would be a request rather than an entitlement in most areas.

Monitoring won't change the outcome.

Do you mean you want treatment / prophylactic intervention? If so then you need to speak to them and/or your GP

CluelessInLondon · 12/08/2024 21:58

There isn't really much point asking here as people will have different experiences - different EPUs won't have the same policy on self-referral after previous losses, so you need to call your local hospital and ask what theirs is. My hospital gave me extra scans in my current pregnancy after just one miscarriage, but it was one which had been diagnosed and treated at the hospital - I don't know if they would have seen me otherwise.

I'm not really sure why people are saying things like "monitoring won't change the outcome" - I imagine you already know that, and presumably want extra scans so that you know quickly if something isn't right. That's perfectly understandable.

Good luck for your pregnancy, I hope this one sticks for you.

I was given fortnightly scans until 12 weeks at the EPU for my third pregnancy following 2 miscarriages. It was my GP that referred me to the EPU so maybe speak to your GP? My GP was very sympathetic to my anxiety and the scans did help curb it (a tiny bit!).

Good luck. My third pregnancy was successful, so it can happen. Not a recommendation as such, but maybe also speak to your GP about taking low dose aspirin. I took it for the third pregnancy. Not sure if it made the difference, but my GP said it couldn't do any harm.

I had 2 early losses (both on record) but was told it takes 3 until anything more will be done. I did have some bleeding at 13.5 weeks though (after the 12 week scan) and was told by the hospital that NICE guidelines are if you’ve had a previous miscarriage and then have bleeding to be seen, scanned and prescribed progesterone until 16 weeks but if no bleeding they don’t have to do anything at all early on unless 3 or more previous miscarriages unless they suspect eptopix or something like that of course. At the hospital I went to it was referral by midwife or GP only before 20 weeks (unless returning after already being seen). Then 20+ weeks is self referral.

I did have a private scan at 9 weeks as didn’t want to wait any longer and knew I wouldn’t get any on the nhs after “only 2” losses.

Best thing to do is ring and ask what their policy is and take it from there. I hope all is ok, I know how worrying it is. Hopefully it helps for you to know my third pregnancy ttc #2 was all good despite the bleeding. 2 losses doesn’t mean your next one won’t be successful 😊

lazysummerdayz · 12/08/2024 22:40

You can't really "tell" them. Likely the CP wouldn't "count" as heartless as that sounds. Many are minimum of 3 losses - ones that the hospital managed/recorded. Even then they may want you to go via a miscarriage clinic which even pre covid in my area was minimum 90 day wait to be seen at and then offered next to nothing other than a few cursory basic blood tests and a wave off saying call when you next get a BFP and we'll scan you at 6 weeks - which really doesn't mean anything/help with preventative measures. Sorry if thats really to the point but I found the whole process disheartening and useless.

deliwoman1 · 13/08/2024 09:21

I’d echo that you can’t tell them, but you can contact them to find out what they might be able to do for you. It’s frustrating but different EPUs have different policies.

In my case it was three losses between 6-8 weeks and one of those was ectopic, so with my history of that in particular I would be seen and scanned, but only if I needed it, i.e., if I self-referred with pain and/or spotting/bleeding. After three I was also referred to the recurrent miscarriage clinic where I had tests done for thrombophilia and was prescribed progesterone from positive test for 12 weeks. No idea if I actually needed that because I didn’t have my levels tested. I didn’t get aspirin prescribed, I presume because thrombo came back negative. I was not shy about insisting on referrals and testing which probably helped but I was also 37-38 years old with no living children so I think my profile was also favourable to getting support.

Blue2020 · 13/08/2024 09:37

You could contact them to ask. I paid for a private scan in the second pregnancy to find it was in the right place with a heartbeat. It was worth the reassurance at the time for me.

Superscientist · 13/08/2024 14:13

I have had 1 miscarriage and they have offered me a scan at 6 weeks and offered progesterone in any subsequent pregnancies.
It might be epu dependent, it might be worth a call to see what's on offer. I've been told to phone them at 5 weeks.
