Hi, I had really bad SPD with DS1 which came on at 25 weeks. I just got my bfp this morning and was wondering what the chances are of me getting it again and worse????

Also, is it safe to do boxercise/aerobics? Stupid qu I know but it wasnt an issue before as I did no exercise at all in my 1st pg (paranoia after 2 mc's)

Pleeease let me escape SPD this time

spd wasn't half as bad for me second time round - still present but later on. in for the third time now and already getting pains and am only 14wks.

pucca · 15/04/2008 21:28

Bad news from me i am afraid, i got it much worse 2nd time around, that was just me though don't know if it is true for everyone. I got it rediculously early 2nd time around at something like 14 weeks, and later on i swear it felt like my hips were going to snap like a wish bone.

See the physio early on and get all the info on things you can do to help.

sorry to ask , but not sure hat SPD is ??

pucca · 15/04/2008 21:29

Have to add though, ds was huge (born 38 weeks at 9lb 6oz), so of course the weight of the baby has some inpact on it all, i also had extra fluid which also didn't help.

Mine is worse 2nd time around. I would stay clear of swimming and yoga. Anything where you have to open your legs! I did aqua aerobics- bad move made it much worse. Ended up seeing a Chiropractor. She has helped to keep it at bay by using manipulation in groin and lower back. I have been going about once every three wks. After a couple of days it almost disappears for about 4 days which is heaven!!!

Sorry to ask again, but could someone explain wot SPD is , as i am 20 wks pregnant and getting a lot of groin/pelvic pain, but i dont know why

sweetkitty · 16/04/2008 13:27

I have had it with all 3 pregnancies, third time has been the worst but then again I have got 2 toddlers to look after this time so don't really get time to rest.

I wouldn't go any exercise sorry it just makes me worse.

slim22 · 16/04/2008 14:27

Mine as bad an as early as first time (about 12 weeks)

BUT....I know how to manage/what to avoid this time so fewer acute episodes.

I'd say exercise that strengthens your legs and core can only help with posture.
However aerobics and boxercise does involves sidekicks and splits, so I would personally avoid as pain always made worse with any sort of jerky leg parting.

Also pace yourself. You need gentle exercise not that sort of bouncing cardio.
No honest gym instructor would let you do it if they knew you were pregnant.

slim22 · 16/04/2008 14:30

Leenie, SPD, now also called pelvic girdle pain might be what you are experiencing.

Google PELVIC PARTNERSHIP they have excellent info and tips on how to manage.

I got it both times. But with the second, I at least knew what to look out for and try to avoid putting extra strain on myself. It kicked in at about 5 months 2nd time. I was seeing an osteopath anyway for a back problem and luckily it turned out it worked with women with spd previously and was able to relieve lots of the pain with massages and advice.

I also arranged to have a high stool out in my classroom (I'm a teacher) and teach only on the ground floor to avoid stairs and this really helped. I put my feet up much more, which I know isn't always possible, depending on how old your dc1 is. Luckily, dd1 was between 3 and a half and 4 for the worst spd months and didn't need picking up much at all.

I'd recommend physio and osteo - I was told to avoid any gym (no problem! ) and 'organised' exercise. Gentle walking was all I could do really and less as time went on. The pain after doing too much really wasn't worth it.

thanks for your replies everyone - although not really what I wanted to hear lol

twinkly toes - soory you've got it already!!!! hope it is even easier for you than last time.
pucca - DS was 6lbs 12, not particularly large so not sure that his weight was the prob - but I was carrying extra fluid too.
Vicky11 - at not opening my legs!
Califrau - Not such bad news
Sweetkitty - that is my worry! It may be a pain (literally) in 1st pg but can imagine it is horrendus with a toddler (let alone TWO!)
Slim22/Moomin - I shall avoid the strenous exercise, anything to try and stave it off a bit longer. Went to a physio last time but had to go every week as as soonas she 're-aligned' me It would just pop out of place again with a day.

Thanks everyone for the advice
