Anyone ever had this before - doctor stating gender at 6 week scan

So, I should begin by saying although I'm British, I'm currently living in a different country and multiple scans are common here. You also choose your obstetrician and that is the person you see from first appointment, every scan and who will deliver your baby.

So we went for a first scan yesterday (vaginal), baby measuring just over 6 weeks and heard heartbeat etc..... and the doctor suddenly says 'that's a boy!' I was shocked and asked how she could possibly tell and she explained about the size of the yolk sac and something about the fetal pole and repeated 'I'm certain, that's definitely a boy'.

We have a 4 year old girl already so this made hubby's day (culturally it's still quite a big deal to have a son where he's from). He'll be gutted now if she's wrong.

I was always under the impression no one would be able to tell that early, although I suppose she has a 50/50 chance of being right! I think I’d be inclined to change doctor, surely you hadn’t even said anything about finding out if you were having a boy or a girl given it was so early. Presumptuous of her to just announce it 😬
Congratulations, by the way!

I'm not sure I'd trust that, I've never heard of it being possible to tell from an ultrasound until 16 weeks. You can tell earlier from a blood test. And please make sure your husband is prepared for the baby being female, not male. All you should want is a healthy child.

Nope, nothing mentioned about wanting to know the sex but in this culture I know it's pretty much a given.
I don't really want to change doctor as she comes highly recommended and speaks fluent English.... the alternatives aren't great.
It just shocked me as I've never heard of being able to predict it that early. Especially since she'll be our doctor right up till the baby is delivered so she'll look a bit silly if she's wrong!

I'm not trusting it either, I just found it crazy that a doctor would say it.
Thankfully hubby adores our daughter and is fine with any healthy baby but I know it's planted the seed with him now about having one of each and he keeps referring to the baby as 'he'
