Are you on the Gestational Diabetes UK Facebook group? there's lots of ideas on there. Jo who runs the group really helped me diet control for my entire pregnancy. She had amazing recipes as well.

Cereals were are a no go for me, they’re all carbs unfortunately. Eggs, bacon, Greek yoghurt with berries were my main breakfast options. Second the suggestion for gestational diabetes uk, they’re great!

This they are so helpful and full of knowledge I wouldn't have survived without it . Generally cereals are a no go , my go to breakfast was two boiled eggs and one slice of whole grain toast . It's all about no eating carbs in there own and eating them with protein and fats but also the amount of carbs . Join the Facebook group in a few days you will have learnt so much

I could tolerate shredded wheat for a while when I had gestational diabetes but had to stop even that towards the end. Eggs are a good breakfast food. I ate a lot of cheese omelettes and they barely affected my levels at all. For snacks I ate berries with full fat cream and cheese and rice cakes.

Madamswearsalot · 08/08/2024 19:41

I never found a cereal/grain I could tolerate in the mornings. I switched to Greek yoghurt and fresh fruit (any dried varieties being very much on the banned list). I also tried to do a walk after a meal though that got much more difficult the bigger I got.

For snacks: two digestives or hobnobs, peanut butter on a slice of wholemeal toast (whole food peanut butter - not sunpat), a small amount of 70% dark chocolate. And for a little treat - no-sugar angel delight! Wouldn’t touch it normally but when everything else was banned I was thrilled to discover it!

It is a bit rubbish - but keep going and it’ll hopefully disappear as soon as your baby arrives.

The only cereal that worked for me blood sugar wise was plain porridge.

Eggs made me throw up whilst pregnant and I'm veggie so it was very difficult to find suitable options!

Rice cake with soft cheese on for a snack
Or rice cake with nut butter

I hate rice cakes now.

Droolylabradors · 08/08/2024 19:48

I had this many years ago before all the resources on the Internet that we have now.

I lived on Greek yoghurt and fruit for the rest of my pregnancy. I was also ok with pancakes made with wholemeal flour which I added yoghurt and banana/berries to.

Fridaysgirl17 · 08/08/2024 19:49

Cereal was also a no go for me,eggs were my go to breakfast with cheese & a slice of wholegrain toast. Snacks for me were rice cakes with peanut butter, apples with peanut butter, Muller yogurts, I'd have dark mint chocolate but only 1/2 bits, pop corn, strawberries, rice cakes with laughing cow & tomatoes. I could tolerate wholemeal pita & would do them toasted with cheese & also fulfil protein bars, I'd have half of one at night just to satisfy that treat craving

CCLCECSC · 08/08/2024 19:50

I couldn't tolerate cereal either. Breakfast was fruit and greek yogurt, or eggs or meat and wholemeal toast.

katerose2022 · 08/08/2024 19:54

I couldn't eat cereal or even plain porridge, that combined with milk (quite high in sugar actually) was no go. I ended up eating one piece of whole grain cracker with unsweetened soya milk.

JessicaPeach · 08/08/2024 19:55

No cereal for me either. I ate a lot of cooked breakfasts, avocado on one slice of seeded toast, cheese on toast etc

I lost quite a bit of weight after my diagnosis, and although I couldn't have my favourite things I did manage to eat quite well once I got used to it.

2sisters · 08/08/2024 19:58

I had eggs for breakfast. You can do so many different types of omelette or yogurt berries and nuts.

For snacks I had hummus and veg stick. Apple and peanut butter. If I was on the fancy I'd have a piece of dark chocolate.

Olives! Mmm! 🫒

I can just about manage the M&S high protein chocolate crunch cereal, but not with milk - I have it with Greek yoghurt instead and chuck in some mixed seeds too. And careful on portion size. Other things I’m having are chia pudding (good one to make the night before and have on the train) or the banana pancakes from the GDUK website (I add flaxseed and chia seeds to the mixture too). I’ve tried porridge a couple of times too and gotten away with it, but have it plain, with jumbo oats, cinnamon and add lots of seeds, and try to make sure I do something active afterwards. Makes a nice difference from eggs, eggs, and more eggs.

Chezwoo · 09/08/2024 12:02

Thank you every one! I know it’s the eggs eggs and more eggs that I’m starting to struggle with 😂

I couldn't do cereals but I had Quakers protein porridge or a slice of bread and two eggs.

JessicaPeach · 09/08/2024 14:25

One thing that might help @Chezwoo is to give up your notions on what is acceptable breakfast food. Have some cooked meat and cheese or something like that if you prefer, those sorts of things.

Cobblersorchard · 09/08/2024 14:31

No cereals. I used to eat ham and chicken by the packet for snacks.

Bagel thin toasted with cream cheese and ham was tolerated well. I had that for breakfast a lot

stackhead · 09/08/2024 14:36

I caved and bought some protein cereal (there's a couple Surreal, Eleat etc...) They're not the best tasting things in the world (and they're bloody expensive), but for a quick pre work brekkie when I could not stomach eggs, or yogurt or anymore meat they do the job!

Diagnosed at 13 weeks, currently 29 weeks!

Mushroo · 09/08/2024 14:46

On the gestational diabetes website there’s a recipie for raspberry muffins using ground almond flour. I used to have these for breakfast with some yoghurt as I was so sick of eggs.

I could also tolerate the crumpet thins with cheese on.

One of the first things I ate when I gave birth was a bowl of coco pops

abbysalias · 09/08/2024 18:30

I hate eggs and also can't tolerate any cereals or oats.
The breakfast I have lived off (and converted hubby and toddler to) is pancakes made with a 1:2 ratio of banana to eggs (I started off with 1:1 but eventually that made me spike), loads of cinnamon and a table spoon of chia seeds. I normally have this with Greek yogurt, fresh fruit and peanut butter. It's so filling and sweet - can't stomach a savoury breakfast. And I was happy to be getting eggs in my diet from a nutrient pov.

That said one of the meals I'm craving once baby is here is a huge bowl of granola topped up with loads of dried fruit.

As a super indulgent snack (but only after lunch or dinner) I have been loving dates filled with peanut butter and coated in 85% dark chocolate. They are so rich you can only manage one or two and as long as I have them after a lunch or dinner high in protein they didn't spike me.

Fairylightsxxx · 09/08/2024 18:54

Another one to say cereals not worth it for the tiny amount you’d have to have to stay in range.

Eggs or avocado on toast usually worked for me I used to hard boil a batch of eggs in advance to save time in the morning. I would recommend Nimble low calorie bread - although a bit flimsy, I could have two slices of that compared to other breads.

Another option was Greek yoghurt with a small amount of berries and some flakes almonds. I don’t know why but the fat in the almonds somehow counteracts the sugar of the berries or something?

Best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy and delivery! GD is such a pain.
