Aspirin prescribed at 18 weeks for miscarriage prevention?

Hi all

i had a previous missed miscarriage in Dec at 8 weeks, got pregnant again In April and am now 18 weeks and 5 days. I have just been prescribed low aspirin from a consultant who reviewed my notes virtually so I haven’t been able to meet with her to discuss the reasons but it just says due to PCOS and previous miscarriage? I can’t find much online but people seem to take aspirin a lot earlier than 18 weeks , they’ve just left it that’s it’s my descion and I’m terrified to do either way! Has anyone else been recommended it in the second trimester for miscarriage prevention?

thanks! Xx

Hi, I'm so sorry that you're feeling terrified. Don't know if this will help, but I did take 75mg aspirin daily in order to conceive my daughter. I kept it quiet from the fertility clinic, and then when I saw my consultant she added in heparin and aspirin anyway! I then came clean hehe. I'm not a doctor (albeit married to one, and a former vet), but aspirin is also meant to help lower the risk of pre-eclampsia. I think it also helps with fertility and pregnancy in reducing micro blood clots? From vague memory from vet school lecture 20+years ago, the lower dose of aspirin helps to stop platelets clumping together, forming blood clots. Hence why cardiac patients are often prescribed it. Personally, I'd take the aspirin. I think asthmatics have to be careful with it, and obviously as with any NSAID to stop it if you get gastric irritation.
I wish you all the best with this pregnancy! If your anxiety goes into oribit at all (mine did a bit after two early miscarriages), then have a look at the havening.org website. It's just stroking your arms, but is soooo good at lowering stress and worry, even when rationally you don't know why you're feeling that way. xx

Hi, I have been prescribed aspirin from 12 weeks to reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia; I think this prescription is fairly common if you have one of the risk factors for it x

It's very common to take it, it's a very small dose compared to the normal adult dose and often if youve had a previous miscarriage or have previous or current issues with blood pressure you'll be recommended to take it from 12 weeks to birth. I took 150mg a day throughout my second pregnancy.

I think it's common to be prescribed aspirin if you have any risk factors. I got mine from 16 weeks onwards until the end.

Aspirin is great, I conceived my son after 2 mcs by taking 150mg per day. It helps blood flow which softens the womb for implantation and helps oxygen get to the baby. I took it again for my current pregnancy and got pregnant the first month, Currently 18 weeks now. I take it right until the week before my due date.

a normal dose of aspirin for pain relief is 600mg every 4 hours, so 150mg once a day is a really low dose.

good luck with your pregnancy xx

Oh thank you all for your lovely replies so kind! Pregnancy is such a scary time, I managed to speak to a midwife and she said it’s for a variety of risk factors but taking it will lower the risk and not do any harm to the baby which was my major concern so I guess it is worth taking! Xx

I think it also has some anti inflammatory properties, or so I have gathered from my mass of research on the subject. Congratulations and good luck.

I took aspirin from 7 weeks to 32 weeks in my last pregnancy and the same now I'm pregnant again. I have a very healthy bubbly toddler! I lost a baby at 18 weeks and my doctors said to take it as a precaution.
